If you find it daunting and stressful to think about how to decorate your home beautifully, or if you don’t have enough time to take care of design tasks yourself, it’s worth hiring a specialist to assist you.

However, with so many different options available these days, it can be tricky to decide who to hire. Read on for some ways to narrow down your choices and ensure you end up with an interior you love.

Ask Around for Referrals

It’s helpful to ask the people in your networks if they’ve used an interior designer before that they might recommend. Rather than guessing who might do a good job and be easy to work with, it’s nice to consider those with whom you know others have had a good experience. Chat with your family members, friends, colleagues, and other contacts to see who they can refer you to.

Read Online Reviews and Testimonials

If the above method doesn’t prove fruitful, turn to the opinions of people you don’t know by reading online reviews and testimonials. Check out forums, social media sites, blog posts, designer websites, and other places for details of feedback from clients who have worked with different interior designers over the years.

Keep in mind that it’s possible for some mentions to be paid, sponsored, or fudged, so you need to keep this in mind when evaluating sources. Still, you’ll often find plenty of helpful critiques online that give the pros and cons of various designers.

Learn Which People Specialize in the Design Style You Want

Before you get too far down the route of choosing a designer, though, you need to ensure those on your shortlist are adept at the design style you want or at working with the architectural style in which your home is built. For instance, if you have a place or vision that’s art deco, French country, modern farmhouse, bohemian, Hamptons, contemporary, or other, you want to hire an interior designer with plenty of experience putting together looks in this vein.

Some designers specialize in one or two areas, but many cover multiple design styles, so look for information about this on their websites or other marketing collateral. You can also ask them outright if you’re unsure about their expertise.

Know Your Budget

You also need to get clear on your budget before you get too excited about a select few designers. You don’t want to get your hopes up about utilizing the services of those renowned in their fields and whose work you love if they’re way too expensive for your means. Come up with a total amount you feel comfortable and can afford to spend on a designer first, and then look for people who fall within this range.

Many people won’t mention their charges on their websites or the like, so you may need to ask about this in a quick initial email, social media reach out, or phone call to ascertain if you should continue learning more about designers or not.

Check Out Portfolios

Another tip for choosing the right interior design for your needs is to examine portfolios of those on your shortlist. While most designers will have some images of their work on their websites and social media pages, you’ll likely want to see more work to get a good idea of their abilities. If you have a particular style or aesthetic in mind, it pays to ask people to send you numerous images that showcase their work in this area so you can see what you think.

Looking over more extensive portfolios can be an excellent way to discern the stand-out designers from those who are just “so-so.” For instance, you might love how a designer has cleverly combined attractive colors in one living room or chosen showstopping ceiling fans for bedrooms. You might see that they’ve been able to source a range of fun, eclectic items for multiple clients or that they’ve had access to the latest and greatest products from renowned designers to create modern looks that scream sophistication.

Before you pick one designer for your job, it also pays to speak with some of each of their past clients to get first-hand notes on their work, find out if designers are actually available within the timeframe you’ve set, and schedule an initial meeting and consult to see if you feel like you click and can communicate effectively. Plus, check the terms and conditions of contracts before signing on the dotted line.

All these steps will assist you in finding the perfect person to bring your vision of a new home design to life and reduce the risk that you outlay money on work you don’t end up appreciating.
