Imagine living in an international city that integrates East and West, old and new, crowded and expansive. That’s Hong Kong. This dynamic city in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong has been an expat hub for many years.

This city is bursting with opportunity and culture. But what is it really like living in Hong Kong? From the transportation system and food to the vibrant neighborhoods and the world-class attractions, it’s an experience you won’t forget.

Ready to get a glimpse of what life in Hong Kong is really like? Let’s go!

Hong Kong’s Housing Market

One of the biggest challenges of living in Hong Kong is the housing market. Housing is in high demand, and prices are among the highest in the world.

Many live in cramped, shared apartments or tiny subdivided flats that are barely a couple of hundred square feet. These are often located in high-density apartment buildings and lack amenities.

Despite this, many options are still available for those interested in acquiring a home, whether it be public housing, private developments, or rent.

Hong Kong Taxes

Corporate taxes, personal income taxes, and property tax in Hong Kong are relatively high. Working in Hong Kong means paying for its many services and associated costs, such as healthcare, education, and housing expenses. It could be said that the cost of living is precisely the price you pay for the hum of energy and fast-paced lifestyle that comes with living in this vibrant city.

Ease of Transportation

Hong Kong’s transportation system is one of the best in the world. There are multiple public transport networks, such as the MTR Metro and the KCR Suburban Rail. These lines make it incredibly easy to reach any part of Hong Kong quickly.

The public transport also connects easily with local bus and ferry services, making transportation between both sides of the harbor a breeze. All these combined make traveling within the city incredibly convenient.

Furthermore, they are cost-efficient, drastically reducing the need and reliance on private transportation. This helps reduce congestion and keeps Hong Kong relatively clean.

Dining for Every Palate

With its reputation of having some of the best-known restaurants and its abundance of traditional street food, you’ll never be stuck for a choice. It can be a taste sensation, with a huge array of cuisines from all over the world available, such as European, Middle Eastern, African, South American, and Indian. Local favorites like dim sum, congee, and egg tarts can be found quickly and cheaply.

Due to its multicultural population, buying ingredients and cooking something familiar to your culture is easy. Groceries are also generally inexpensive.

High-Tech Living

Hong Kong is a modern metropolis. It is full of the latest technological advances. Digital advancements allow us to pay for almost everything digitally, including parking fees and public transportation fares.

In terms of entertainment, Hong Kong has as much to offer as any other developed city, from movies in 3D to concerts and live performances. The city is also home to some of the world’s most advanced educational organizations, business parks, and innovative technology hubs.

Learn More About Living in Hong Kong

Living in Hong Kong offers many experiences depending on your needs and wants. With its great food, transportation, public parks, and buzzing nightlife, it’s easy to understand why many people call Hong Kong home. Why not try it and explore the unique culture Hong Kong lifestyle has to offer?
