Self-storage units are handy for people who have a house full of furniture and other items they don’t need all the time. They can use these storage units to hold their extra stuff without cluttering up their homes. But this article is not about how great self-storage units are or about how they can help you and your family.

This article is about what you should consider storing in a storage unit and why you should view those items. It also covers things you shouldn’t keep in a storage unit and why you shouldn’t.

Without further ado, let’s explore some of the things You Should Store in your self-storage unit

Personal Belongings

These include documents like your birth certificate, family photos, and other valuable items that you would want to recover quickly if the need ever arose. These belongings are perfect for storage as they take up very little space, and you probably won’t need to access them too often. The only downside is that they are not fireproof. However, you will be extremely glad to have these belongings stored in a safe place during a move to another state. For instance, you shouldn’t ignore moving service reviews before hiring one of them if you plan on moving.

Items You Use Only Once in a While

These are things like holiday decorations, seasonal clothes, and tools that you only use for your hobbies. Some people may want to get rid of these things, but they are still helpful to some extent. You can store them in your self-storage unit so you can remove them from your living space, freeing up space for other things. The downside is that they take up a lot of space, and you need to pay rent every month to keep them. After all, we can’t let our hobbies go, can we?

Items You No Longer Need But Are Worth Some Money

If you have an old wedding dress that you don’t need, you can store it in your storage unit. You might want to remove clutter from your house, but you also need to be aware of the value of your items. If you don’t believe they are worth anything, you can still clean them up and donate them to charity. The downside is that you have to pay storage fees for them, but isn’t it better than letting your stuff go to waste?

Things You Plan to Sell

Some items are difficult to sell, especially if they are big. These items may be easier to sell if you store them in your self-storage unit. Also, if you hold on to them for too long and forget about them, they might become unusable or worthless. The items you want to sell might lose value over time, so it’s better to get rid of them when you can. The downside is that you will pay storage fees, and it can be costly if your items lose value.

If you have a lot of furniture or other items that you don’t need all the time, it’s best to store them in your self-storage unit. All you have to do is go through your items, sort them out, and organize them in your storage unit. That will help you keep your house free of clutter at all times.

Things You Want to Keep Out of Sight

Some people may want to keep their items out of sight if they need them or use them. For example, if there are items that you don’t want your visitors to see, you can store them in your storage unit. You can also remove clutter from your house if you have a big party or event coming up. The downside is that you will have to pay storage fees.

You have decided to rent a storage unit to store some of your things. But it’s not enough to pay for the services, and you need to make sure that you are doing it correctly.

That said, let’s look at a few things you should avoid storing in your self-storage unit.

Paper Products

These include documents, reports, and other forms of paperwork. These items are prone to moisture damage, so it’s best to store them in a safe place. You can use one of your desk drawers or cabinets at home to store these items, as long as it is dry and safe. Paper is also prone to pest infestation, especially rats and cockroaches. If you store paper products in your storage unit, it will attract pests and cause the items to be damaged.

Food Items

Store food items in your self-storage unit will attract cockroaches, rodents, and other pests. It will also cause your food items to spoil within a short period. If you want to keep your food items out of sight, it’s best to throw them away. The good news is that you can recycle many of them.

Electronics and Appliances

Don’t store these items in your self-storage unit because they can cause damage to your other items. If you want to keep them, place them in a waterproof container before placing them in your unit. The downside is that these items are expensive to replace.

Motor Vehicles

These units are for things that you don’t need or use very often, and this might include items like your motorcycle. It can be difficult to remove your vehicle from your house, so you should never store your car in a storage unit. This option can be expensive to maintain, especially if you’re paying rent every month. The good news is that storage units are secure, so you won’t have to worry about your documents being stolen.

Flammable Items

Items prone to fire or explosion should not be stored in your self-storage unit. These items include paint, gasoline, and other flammable liquids. Sparks can happen anytime, which can cause flammable items to catch on fire. Don’t store anything that has the potential to burn your storage unit down. The good news is that these items can be placed in other rooms at your house.

Conclusion

Before you store anything in your self-storage unit, it’s best to ask for some advice first. Ask for recommendations from friends or family members who have used a storage unit before. You can also read some blogs that provide more information on which items you should not put in your unit. The last thing you want to do is lose all of your items and money because you were not careful enough.
