Los Angeles is a city known for its busy streets and pedestrians. Driving on Los Angeles area roads that are deteriorated and congested costs the average driver $2,995 annually in additional operating costs.

Based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports, pedestrian fatalities accounted for 16 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2016.

With so many people on the sidewalks and crossing the street, it’s essential to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions to stay safe.

Here are four pedestrian safety tips by a Los Angeles Pedestrian Accident Lawyer.

1. Cross At Intersections Or Crosswalks

As a pedestrian, one should cross the street at designated intersections or crosswalks to stay safe and avoid causing any accidents.

Drivers expect you to cross at intersections and stop if they see you in the crosswalk. Crossing outside of a designated intersection or crosswalk is also illegal and can result in a traffic citation.

If you’re crossing the street, remember to always look both ways before crossing and never assume that the driver sees you.

2. Watch For Turning Cars

Reports state that the average car ownership in Los Angeles is two cars per household. It means that there are more cars than people in Los Angeles. When walking on the road, watch out for both turning and crossing vehicles to avoid getting hit.

Drivers often don’t see pedestrians crossing the street and may not have time to stop. Make sure you’re visible to drivers and always walk facing oncoming traffic.

When crossing the street, never enter the road until there is a safe opportunity to do so and never walk out in front of a car that’s already stopped.

If you’re driving, always be on the lookout for pedestrians and maintain a safe speed.

3. Watch Out For Speeding Bicyclists And Motorcycles

Just like drivers, bicyclists and motorcyclists can be a danger to pedestrians. Often speeding and not following the road rules can cause severe injuries to pedestrians.

When walking, always be aware of the cyclists and motorcycles surrounding you on the road. Don’t try to walk past a bicyclist or motorcycle who’s in the same lane as you. If you’re on a sidewalk, make sure to pay attention so that the cyclist doesn’t hit you.

4. Wear Appropriate, Wear High Visibility Clothing

When walking on the street, always wear bright and reflective clothing so that drivers can see you. It is essential at night when visibility may be reduced.

When walking on the road, consider the weather and dress appropriately. In Los Angeles, it’s often raining or cold, so dress accordingly.

If you’re wearing headphones or earbuds while walking on the road, keep the volume low enough so that you can hear traffic and emergency vehicles.

Are you walking with a dog? Make sure your furry friend is also wearing some bright and reflective gear. If you are a road accident victim, contacting a Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyer can be of great help.

Conclusion

These are a few ways to stay safe while walking on Los Angeles’ busy streets.

If you or someone you know has been injured in an accident, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a Los Angeles lawyer for help.
