A car is a handy and efficient way to get around, but they aren’t particularly cheap to run. The cost of fuel, as well as the associated costs of running a car, can mount up, so it’s worth keeping an eye on your spending and making savings where you can.

Here are 4 ways to reduce car costs and save money driving.

Shop around for fuel

If you are inclined to visit the nearest gas station and fill up without checking fuel prices, you could make decent savings by shopping around. Gas stations situated on a freeway, for example, will typically charge far more than one located in a busy town center, so where possible, pre-plan your fuel stops.

If you aren’t sure of current prices, there are phone apps that can tell you where your nearest gas stations are and how much they charge.

Consider an extended vehicle warranty

Extended warranties are a great option if you have an older vehicle and the manufacturer’s guarantee has lapsed. If you are used to shelling out hundreds for new parts or for fixing issues that arise from time to time, an extended warranty might be a great money-saving option for you. Cover varies from company to company, so it’s worth investigating which suits your situation best.

When comparing extended warranty providers such as Protect My Car Vs. Endurance, for example, Endurance offers a broader range of plans, whereas Protect My Car comes highly recommended by other road users and offers the best maintenance plans. Whichever you decide to go for, you might be surprised at how much you could save each year.

Compare car insurance premiums

One of the biggest mistakes drivers make is auto-renewing their car insurance and not shopping around for quotes. Your existing insurance provider knows that (in some cases) it’s more convenient to renew, and so they typically increase your premiums each year.
Instead of accepting the first price you get, compare insurance premiums online or contact your existing provider and ask if they can give you a better quote. You might be surprised at how much you could save by spending ten minutes on a comparison site or making a phone call to your existing insurers.

Use less fuel

Did you know that driving with your windows open or using your air conditioning uses more fuel? Small changes can equate to big savings, so keep your windows closed and only use your air-con when you have to. Excess weight in a vehicle equates to using more gas, so If your trunk is full of things you don’t need, sort through it all and store only the items you use regularly.

Another great way to reduce your fuel consumption is to stop using your car so often. If you are traveling to a location that isn’t too far, why not walk instead? Not only will you be saving money on fuel, but it’s good for your health, and you will be helping the environment too!
