If you’re looking for a self-service laundry guide, then you’ve come to the right place. This article will serve as your step-by-step guide to washing clothes like a pro. However, if you are short of time to do the laundry yourself, you may also consider finding a good laundry service in your location. Search for “laundries that wash and fold near me.” on Google to find the best options.

Here are a few tips to help you have the best results out of your laundry service.

Washing Clothes Properly: The Essential Steps

Start with Clean Clothes

Avoid cross-contamination by separating the clothes because dirt from one load can end up on another, which defeats the purpose of separating them in the first place. Skipping the pre-soak saves time & energy because you won’t have to wait around or monitor an extra load.

Soak heavily soiled fabrics (such as work clothes), and delicate fabrics or items that you know will fall apart if put through the regular cycle.

And always read instructions on care tags for clothes such as wool, cashmere, and silk because even though they’re natural fibers, machine washing them could damage them (and possibly shrink them).

Wash Dark Colors Separately From Lighter Colors

This is because darks bleed, which can cause other clothes to become discolored. Heavy-duty detergents strip the color out of lighter-colored clothing; it’s best to use a laundry additive or, better yet, use a color catcher liquid.

You can also add a few drops of green dishwashing liquid to the wash water, which also helps prevent color bleeding.

Coldwater Is Fine for Washing Clothes, but Hot Water Will Speed the Process

Hot water is also great for washing clothes as it helps get rid of stains and odors more effectively. Don’t use commercial fabric softener in your wash because it can coat fibers and reduce their absorbency (although using it in the rinse cycle is okay).

Use white vinegar in place of softener (1/2 cup per load or 1/3 cup if you use high-efficiency machines-it removes soap residue better than any detergent) and be sure to add ½ cup salt for soft whites instead.

Vinegar leaves clothes smelling nice with no build-up at all and is suitable for all colors. It’s a natural mineral that softens hard water and reduces fading from the sun.

Keep Hot Items from Bunching up by Keeping Them Moving While They’re Washing

This step will keep them from piling up on top of one another and allow more space for water to circulate all sides evenly, without some pieces ending up more spoiled than others.

If your washer has an agitator in it, always start with the smaller items at the bottom and work your way up towards the larger stuff at the top because this will help reduce tangling. It’ll distribute soiling around larger loads more effectively too.

Set Wash Cycles to Last for at Least 10 Minutes

Shorter cycles don’t usually cover enough ground. The longer the cycle, the more time it has to thoroughly clean clothes, and likewise, the less chance there is of detergent residue remaining on your clothing after washing.

Always choose cold water over hot water for washing to keep colors from fading because hot water tends to strip color. The cool down after the spin cycle is enough to prevent colors from bleeding in the wash.

Spin dry clothes until there’s no more water dripping but not so much that it pokes holes in them and gets your clothes squeaky clean.

If you lack time to do this chore every week, you may start searching for “laundries that offer services like wash and fold near me” on Google to ease your workload. There are many efficient laundry service providers coming up in many neighborhoods that offer great value for money services and help save time and money for those running on tight schedules.
