Where would we be without game designers? More specifically, game designing companies. Sure, there are indie developers but they usually don’t have the resources and financial strength to churn out games that will live on forever in the memories of gaming community. In this blog, I will be taking a look at some of the most prominent and established game designing companies’ worldwide, and what exactly earned them a spot in the top ranking:
Nintendo
Most popular titles: Mario series, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon
Revenue wise: Number one in the world
No gamer in the right sense of their mind would deny the impact this Japanese company has had on the gaming world! If there’s a gaming world hall of fame, this company would be occupying the top spot on it by virtue of their timeless classics mentioned above. Nintendo also leads the console sales with their Wii which also has the distinction of being the first gaming console to incorporate screen based actions on gamer’s movement in real life. The company also produces Nintendo DS handheld gaming device.
Blizzard Entertainment
Most popular titles: WoW (world of warcraft) Diablo series, Star Craft
Revenue wise: Number two only to Nintendo
The name of this behemoth company will always be synonymous with MMORPG excellence! People at Blizzard have defined what MMORGP games should be like and have set the proverbial bar high for others. No one can make MMORPG games and the fact that World of Warcraft has been mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most subscribed to MMORPG game on the planet is open testament to the creativity and genius of this game designing house. Blizzard merged with Activision in 2008 and since then has been known as Activision Blizzard. It has the honor of being the only company that has “leading market positions across all categories” of the video game industry.
Electronic Arts aka EA
Most popular titles: Mass Effect trilogy, Medal of Honor series, Need for Speed series
Revenue wise: Fourth in the world
Number one game publishing company in the western hemisphere and having 20 years of game developing experience under their belt puts EA in the third spot on this countdown. Without EA, there would be no commander shepherd to save the galaxy from that evil alien horde! EA has since acquired some very successful game developers under its banner namely Bioware, Criterion Games Visceral Games which substantially extend its already impressive resume. With an impressive sequel lineup of some immensely popular video games, EA looks set to take the gaming world by storm!
Capcom
Most popular titles: Resident Evil Series, Street Fighter Series, Devil May Cry Series
Revenue wise: Doesn’t matter!
Last but not the least is my personal favorite game designing company and one of the top game designers. Capcom has been in the business since 1979 and have churned out titles that will forever live in the hearts and memories of video game fans. They practically created the fighting game genre with Street Fighter and zombie survival genre with Resident Evil. The revenue this company generates doesn’t matter to me (biased opinion) as long as they continue to create gems like Mega Man and Breath Of Fire.
