Bear spray is a less-than-lethal weapon to stop aggressive bears. It is used at close range when the bear is attacking and effectively stops the attack and gives you time to escape.

Here are eight tips to remember when using it.

What is Bear Spray?

Bear repellant is a can of pepper spray used to deter animals. Most states in the US allow people to carry and use it. This spray will not kill an animal, but it will cause it to feel pain and irritation. You should also hold the can upright and use it for at least five seconds. Overall, the spray can be a helpful tool if confronted by an animal.

How to Use the Spray

When using a spray, it is essential to remember a few key tips. First, the repellent should only be used as a last resort. You should only use it if a bear is coming after you and you can’t get away safely.

Second, you should aim the spray at the animal’s face. This will help to deter the animal and give you time to escape.

Third, you should hold the spray in one hand while you are retreating. This will allow you to aim the spray and have one hand free to defend yourself if necessary.

Fourth, immediately leave the area once you have used the repellent. Do not stick around to see what happens.

8 Tips to Remember When Using Animal repellent

When you use a repellent, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Read the instructions on the spray can before using it.
  • Make sure the repellent is easily accessible, such as in a hip holster.
  • When you see a bear, stay calm and do not run.
  • Slowly back away from the bear while continuing to face it.
  • If the bear does not leave, begin to spray when it is about 30 feet away.
  • Aim for the bear’s face and eyes.
  • Continue spraying until the bear turns away or until the can is empty.
  • If a bear attacks you, drop to the ground and play dead.

How to Store Animal repellent

Bear repellent should be kept somewhere cool and dry. It shouldn’t be kept in the car or in direct sunlight.

When storing a spray, it is essential to keep it out of the reach of children and pets. You should also keep the spray away from heat sources like stoves and fireplaces.

How to Respond if a Bear Attacks You

Avoid sudden movements, and do not turn your back on the bear.

Hold the canister and point it at the bear if you have repellent. Don’t touch the trigger until you’re ready to use the gun. When ready, spray the bear in short bursts, aiming for the face.

Once the animal is gone, call authorities and report the incident. Do not try to track down or apprehend the bear yourself.

Conclusion

The spray effectively deters an animal attack, but it is essential to remember that it is only used as a last resort. If you are planning on hiking or camping in a country, ensure you are prepared by reading up on safety and carrying a repellent with you at all times.
