Cheryl Boone Isaacs to Produce 2012 Governors Awards

Don Mischer Productions Returns for Fourth Show.
Beverly Hills, CA (July 9, 2012) – Marketing executive Cheryl Boone Isaacs will produce the 4th Annual Governors Awards for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Academy President Tom Sherak announced. She will share the duties with the Don Mischer Production team led by Don Mischer, Charlie Haykel and Juliane Hare. One or more of the Academy’s highest honors – the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Honorary Award – will be presented at the event on Saturday, December 1, in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at the Hollywood & Highland Center®.

“Cheryl’s vision, creativity and her love of movies and our Academy are the perfect foundation for honoring those who have given so much to our industry,” said Sherak. “It’s also a pleasure to welcome back Don and his team, some of the most capable professionals in the business, who will give our honorees and guests an exciting and unforgettable evening.”

Boone Isaacs, a member of the Academy’s Board of Governors representing the Public Relations Branch, currently heads CBI Enterprises, Inc. where she has consulted on such films as “The Artist,” “The King’s Speech,” “Precious,” “Spiderman 2″ and “Tupac: Resurrection.“ Boone Isaacs served as president of theatrical marketing for New Line Cinema, where she oversaw box offices successes including “The Spy who Shagged Me” and “Rush Hour.” Prior to joining New Line Cinema in 1997, Boone Isaacs served as executive vice president of worldwide publicity for Paramount Pictures. She orchestrated publicity campaigns for “Forrest Gump” and “Braveheart,” each of which won multiple Academy Awards®, including Best Picture.

Mischer is a veteran television producer and director who has been recognized with 15 Emmy® Awards and a record 10 Directors Guild of America Awards. With a career spanning more than three decades, his credits include producing and directing the 83rd and 84th Academy Awards; opening and closing ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City; the 2004 Democratic National Convention; Super Bowl halftime shows starring Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and Prince; and “We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial.”

Haykel and Hare most recently executive produced “Oscars® Red Carpet Live,” the 90-minute red carpet arrivals show that immediately preceded the 84th Academy Awards telecast in February. They were also consulting producers for the Oscar® telecast.

The 2012 honorees will be selected at a specially convened meeting of the Academy’s Board in August.

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Honorary Award are Oscar statuettes; the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award is a bust of its namesake.

Disney Media Distribution and Academy Extend Oscar® Telecast Agreement

Beverly Hills, CA (June 29, 2012) – Disney Media Distribution and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have extended their agreement for DMD to distribute the annual Academy Awards® telecast internationally through 2020, Tom Sherak, Academy president and Anne Sweeney, president of the Disney/ABC Television Group, announced today. The previous agreement had been set to expire in 2014.

Eddie Murphy Replacement Billy Crystal to Return as Host for 84th Academy Awards

On Thursday, November 10, 2011 Producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced that Billy Crystal will serve as host for the 84th Academy Awards.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Billy back to the Oscar® stage,” said Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Tom Sherak. “He’s a comic legend and Oscar icon, and it feels good to have him back where he belongs.”

Commented Grazer, “Like so many others, I’ve been eager to see Billy host again. It’s very gratifying that he agreed to do it with Don and me at the helm.”

Said Mischer, “With Billy, we’re moving forward with one of the greatest hosts in Oscar history. His return to the Oscars® is, in a sense, a celebration.”

This will mark Crystal’s ninth time as host. Only Bob Hope has hosted more Academy Awards presentations, with 19 ceremonies between 1940 and 1978. Crystal last hosted the Academy Awards in 2004.

“Some of the best moments of my career have happened on the Oscar stage. I am thrilled to be back there. Actually, I am doing this so that the young woman in my pharmacy will stop asking me my name when I pick up my prescriptions,” said Crystal.

Breaking News: Brian Grazer To Produce 84th Academy Awards with Don Mischer

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is not wasting time after Brett Ratner resigned as producer of the 84th Academy Awards, they have found a replacement.

Academy President Tom Sherak announced today that Academy Award®-winner Brian Grazer will join Don Mischer as a producer of the 84th Academy Awards. This will be the first time Grazer has produced the Oscar® telecast.

“Brian Grazer is a renowned filmmaker who over the past 25 years has produced a diverse and extraordinary body of work,” said Sherak. “He will certainly bring his tremendous talent, creativity and relationships to the Oscars®.”

“I am thrilled to welcome Brian Grazer as my partner and that we will be  collaborating to produce an outstanding show,” echoed Mischer.

“It’s very gratifying to be part of a show that honors excellence in the medium to which I have devoted so much of my career,” said Grazer. “Don is a legend, and I am excited to work with him.”

“I too am delighted that Brian will join Don in producing the Academy Awards and I am looking forward to our producers delivering the movie event of the year,” commented Academy CEO Dawn Hudson.

Grazer has earned four Academy Award nominations. He won a Best Picture Oscar in 2001 for “A Beautiful Mind.” In 1984, Grazer was nominated in the writing category for “Splash,” and he received Best Picture nominations in 1995 and 2008 for “Apollo 13″ and “Frost/Nixon,” respectively.  His other film credits include “Spies Like Us,” “Kindergarten Cop,” “The Nutty Professor,” “Liar Liar,” “8 Mile” and “Cinderella Man.”  His current projects include the about to be released “J. Edgar” and the just released “Tower Heist.”

First Producer Brett Ratner Resigns and Now Eddie Murphy Withdraws as host of the 84th Academy Awards

On Wednesday, November 9, 2011 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak announced that Eddie Murphy has withdrawn as host of the 84th Academy Awards. “I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well,” said Sherak.

Commented Murphy, “First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.”

ACADEMY STATEMENT REGARDING BRETT RATNER Released November 8, 2011:

This morning, Brett Ratner submitted his resignation as a producer of the 84th annual Academy Awards to Academy President Tom Sherak. Ratner then issued an open letter to the entertainment industry in which he explained his decision.

“He did the right thing for the Academy and for himself,” Sherak said. “Words have meaning, and they have consequences. Brett is a good person, but his comments were unacceptable. We all hope this will be an opportunity to raise awareness about the harm that is caused by reckless and insensitive remarks, regardless of the intent.”

Regulations Concerning the Promotion of Films Eligible for the 84th Academy Awards

On Wednesday, September 21, 2011 The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today issued regulations for how movies and achievements eligible for the 84th Academy Awards may be marketed to Academy members. The most notable change affects screening events that include filmmaker participation. Additional changes address digital delivery of movies to Academy members and public references to competing films or achievements via social media platforms.

“These campaign regulations play an important role in protecting the integrity of the Academy Awards process and the distinction of the Oscar®,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “Above all, we want Academy members to see movies as they were meant to be seen, in a theatrical setting.”

Prior to the nominations announcement (January 24, 2012), there are no restrictions on screening events to which Academy members may be invited. These events may include the live participation of individuals involved with the film (Q&A panel discussions, etc.) as well as receptions with food and beverage. After the nominations have been announced, Academy members may continue be invited to screenings that have filmmaker participation elements but receptions are not permitted. While there is no restriction on the total number of screenings of a particular movie, no one individual from the film can participate in more than two panel discussions. Previously, Academy members could not be invited to any screening event that included live participation of the filmmaker(s) or a reception either before or after the nominations had been announced.


Additionally, after nominations are announced and until final polls close, members may not be invited to or attend any non-screening event that promotes or honors a nominated movie or individual nominee. Nominees themselves are also prohibited from attending such events. Academy-sanctioned events and awards ceremonies presented by the various guilds, critics groups and other organizations are exempt.

The regulations now emphasize that viewing motion pictures in a theatrical setting is highly preferred over any other viewing method. The distribution of screeners is still permitted, however, with specific restrictions on packaging and accompanying materials. The digital distribution of movies to Academy members is now acceptable, as long as the delivery method conforms to the regulations.

The long-standing ban on negative campaigning about other nominated films or individuals is now extended to social media platforms, and specific penalties are spelled out. Academy members will be subject to a one-year suspension for first-time violations and expulsion for any subsequent violations. As in the past, any form of advertising that includes quotes or comments – negative or positive – by Academy members is prohibited.

Tom Sherak Re-elected President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

On Tuesday, August 2, 2011 The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was announced that Tom Sherak was re-elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by the organization’s Board of Governors.

This will be his third consecutive one-year term in the office. Sherak is beginning his ninth year as a governor representing the Executives Branch.  He had previously also served as treasurer for the Academy.

In addition, Producers Branch governor Hawk Koch was elected first vice president; Executives Branch governor Robert Rehme was elected to one vice president post and Writers Branch governor Phil Robinson was re-elected to the other vice president post; Short Films and Feature Animation Branch governor John Lasseter was elected treasurer; and Actors Branch governor Annette Bening was re-elected secretary.


Sherak, a marketing, distribution and production executive with more than four decades of experience in the motion picture industry, is currently a consultant for Skydance Productions and Relativity Media.

Previously, Sherak was a partner at Revolution Studios where he oversaw the release of more than 30 films including “Black Hawk Down,” “Anger Management,” “Rent,” and “Across the Universe.”

Prior to joining Revolution, Sherak was chairman of Twentieth Century Fox Domestic Film Group and served as senior executive vice president of Fox Filmed Entertainment.  Previously, he held various positions at Fox, including senior executive vice president, where he oversaw the distribution and post-production of “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Speed,” and “Independence Day,” among others.

In 1990 Sherak was named executive vice president of Twentieth Century Fox. Prior to that he was president of domestic distribution and marketing for Fox, where he launched such films as “Romancing the Stone,” ” Aliens,” “Wall Street,” “Die Hard”  and “Working Girl.”  He began his career in the industry at Paramount Pictures in 1970.

Academy board members serve three-year terms, while officers serve one-year terms, with a maximum of four consecutive terms in any one office.

Christina Kounelias named Chief Marketing Officer for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

On Friday, July 29, 2011 The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Christina Kounelias has been named Chief Marketing Officer for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The announcement was made by Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. Ms. Kounelias will assume her new role on August 1 and will report directly to Hudson.

“As the Academy expands and fosters the achievements of the film community and its legacy, we are proud to have an executive of Christina’s caliber join us in this vital role,” said Hudson. “Christina brings a wealth of experience and a strategic perspective from working within the film community, which makes her the right person at the right time to lead our marketing initiatives and build upon the Academy’s on-going achievements.”

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with an extraordinary organization,” said Kounelias. “I am so honored to be working with Dawn, Ric Robertson, Tom Sherak, and the Academy’s talented team.”


In this new position, Kounelias will oversee all planning, strategy and marketing execution of Academy initiatives including its signature Oscar telecast, the Governors Awards and year-round educational outreach and screening programs. The marketing, communications and online staff will report to her.

Kounelias joins the Academy from WB-based New Line Cinema, where she served as Executive Vice President, Marketing. She worked at the studio for 17 years and held senior posts in marketing and PR during her tenure there – highlights of which include innovative campaigns for Peter Jackson’s landmark “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Prior to New Line, Kounelias worked at Miramax Films, where she established their PR department. Additionally, she has worked on campaigns for a diverse array of films including “Sex and the City,” “Wedding Crashers,” “Hairspray,” “Little Children,” “About Schmidt,” “A History of Violence,” the “Austin Powers” and “Rush Hour” franchises, “Boogie Nights,” “Cinema Paradiso,” “My Left Foot” and “Seven.”
