Quinton Aaron, Rick Ross Attend Karlie Redd’s Pre-BET Awards Summer Night Soiree benefiting Pancreatic Cancer Research

Special Story by Kitty Pleasant, for Diversity News Magazine.

On Friday June 30, 2012 Karlie Redd hosted a benefit to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer Research in a private residential mansion located on the outskirts of Sunset Boulevard in the Hollywood Hills of the City of Los Angeles.

Among the attendees were a slew of celebrities including Quinton Aaron. Mr. Aaron made his feature film debut in his first lead role as Michael Oher in the 2009 film The Blind Side with actress Sandra Bullock.
Also Freeway Rick Ross know for his days as a King Pin, now a reformed man dedicating his life to teaching youths how not to go down the wrong path in Life. The real “Rick Ross” has been actively touring urban America spreading his message, and motivational speaking to at-risk youth, the hood, ex-offenders, and recovering addicts, about the powers of redemption, and he spoke at the Annual Savior’s Day.

Ms. Reatha Grey of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, as well  Jackie Christie of Basketball Wives were just a few of the celebrities we caught up with.

The celebrity guests showed their support by attending
this event to raise funds to further medical research in the efforts to find a cure for Pancreatic Cancer.

The evening got off to a rocky start, many people that wanted to attend the fundraiser ended up leaving, including media at the shuttle pick up point, there was a miscommunication in the email confirmation that were sent out
giving the wrong shuttle pick up address. For those of us that had the correct information and or limo pick up, the evening was well worth it. Donations were collected at the door as well as various stations placed through out the mansion.

The benefit featured a VIP section with an open bar showcasing Hula Girl Beverages, the VIP guests were greeted by B.J. Drake, Marketing Director and Brand Ambassador from Hula Girl Beverages. The VIP guests also received gift bags, enjoyed appetizers, and got the opportunity to mingle with celebrities in designated areas throughout the mansion.

The soiree was very inviting and joyful, the entire Diversity News Magazine and Diversity News TV Team always supports legitimate events raising funds for research and prevention.

The party was to benefit Pancreatic Cancer Research, so money collected would encourage additional research, increase awareness, and support families in need. “Pancreatic cancer is a serious condition. Most cases of pancreatic cancer have already spread at the time of diagnosis, making a full cure unlikely.” –WebMD.

On Monday, February 20, 2012 The Multicultural Motion Picture Association announced the 7 student filmmaker’s finalists have been selected from The Los Angeles Film School for their upcoming the 19th Annual MMPA Oscar Week Student Filmmaker’s Scholarship Luncheon and Civic Awards.

The event will be held at prestigious and luxury Sofitel Hotel Los Angeles located at 8555 Beverly Boulevard in Beverly Hills, CA 90048 on Friday, February 24, 2012, from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm. A dual purpose in recognizing these outstanding individuals is the ability to benefit the Multicultural Motion Picture Association’s Educational and Development Scholarship Fund. This fund was established by our Executive Committee as a means of helping underprivileged students seeking entry into the film and television professions, develop and foster quality education, leadership, and talent.

The MMPA utilizes committed individuals who bring their skills and commitment to schools, as well as youth and civic organizations, where teens and young adults need career mentoring, coupled with equipment and technical support.

Some of the invited guests for the afternoon are 2012 Oscar Nominees Viola Davis & Octavia Spencer, Academy Award Winner Louis Gossett Jr., Academy Award Nominee Sally Kirkland, Actress Bai Ling, Producer Elaina Archer, Actress/Acting coach Bobbie Chance, Photographer/Filmmaker Kami Zargham McAdam and many 2012 Oscar Nominees and various celebrities will be on hand to support the young upcoming student filmmakers.

Here are some blurs of what students wrote when applying for the scholarship:

“When people ask me “why I chose a career in filmmaking”, I can only smile. Because one day, like Picasso or Shakespeare, I know they’ll be able to look at me and see the real answer; this is simply just what I do.”

- Anthony Mitchell

“I want my films to be just as empowering if not more. I express myself visually, and I want to be able to benefit people through experiencing films I create. I want to be mentioned with the great filmmakers of my generation. I want to be able to impact the world in a positive way through my expressions on screen. I want my work to speak for itself.”

- William Rouse

“Even now, as a film student, there is one thing I regret. I regret not knowing what I wanted to do sooner and regret not pursuing film after graduating from High School. Wasted 4 years in a Business College, when I could’ve been done with film school and started on my first feature film. However, even though I’m late from realizing my passion, I am rather late in knowing that I want to be a Director than not knowing at all.”

- Long “Yoshi” Tran

“There is a story to be told, a way to go about doing it, and the proper time and place for it to be heard. I wholeheartedly believe that it is my job as a filmmaker and human being to tell that story in the richest and most provocative form imaginable.”

-Daemon Stashko

“Coming from a town of 300 people, and a high school in a town of 5000, it should be fairly apparent that I did not get much diversity. It is safe to say that making such a drastic change in setting was a little nerve-racking at first, but after learning how this city works I can say with confidence that diversity is my favorite thing about Los Angeles. I may not be the typical Hollywood film student, but I think my background gives me an advantage since I know how to work harder than most people. I believe that I add a lot of diversity to the melting pot that is Hollywood.”

- Joey Schmitz

“As a kid, films caught my attention and have always felt connected with them. It was and still is an art that I am very eager to perfect. Great filmmakers are the ones who put the full amount of effort to perfect their craft and that is what we, as a team, plan on doing to become some of the world’s best Filmmakers.”

- Justin Benson

“As a younger growing up, I was always interpreted in television and motion picture and how it was been produced. I am happy to be in film school fulfilling my dreams. I hope one day to become a successful filmmaker and give back to other up and coming young filmmaker students.”

- Jamel Benson

The prestigious organization of actors, cinematographers, editors, writers, and directors has in the past played host to an array of celebrities and nominees from Salma Hayek,Robert DeNiroKate Winslet and Djimon Hounsou to Sandra BullockDenzel Washington, and Leonardo DiCaprio among others.  The luncheon is always anticipated and remembered for its spontaneous surprises of high-profile guests and the goodwill shared among colleagues, coming out in support of talented emerging artists.

“I was just gonna reiterate that with Rob and Patrick, who took a very brave shot with this movie. And we owe them dearly. Perhaps one more dedication, to men and women all over the world who… Sorry to reiterate, but wear a uniform, but even not just the military – HazMat, emergency, firemen. They’re there for us and we’re there for them. Thank you. Thank you.” said Kathryn Bigelow, Director for Best Picture.

“Did I really earn this or did I just wear you all down? I would like to thank the Academy for allowing me in the last month to have the most incredible ride with rooms full of artists that I see tonight and that I’ve worked with before and I hope to work with in the future, who inspire me and blaze trails for us. Four of them that I’ve fallen deeply in love with I share this night with and I share this award with.” said Sandra Bullock, Oscar winner as Actress in a Leading Role for The Blind Side.

She added “I have so many people to thank for my good fortune in this lifetime and this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I know. To the family that allowed me to play them, the Tuohy family, I know they’re in here and you’ll probably hear her in a minute. Maybe not. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to… the family that made this film that gave me the opportunity to do something different. John Lee Hancock, Gil Netter, Alcon, Warner Bros., the actors, everyone who’s shown me kindness when it wasn’t fashionable, I thank you. To everyone who was mean to me when it wasn’t… George Clooney threw me in a pool years ago. I’m still holding a grudge. But there’s so many people to thank.”

“I would like to thank what this film is about for me which are the moms that take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from. Those moms and parents never get thanked. I, in particular, failed to thank one. So… if I can take this moment to thank Helga B. for not letting me ride in cars with boys until I was 18 because she was right. I would’ve done what she said I was gonna do. For making me practice every day when I got home. Piano, ballet, whatever it is I wanted to be. She said to be an artist, you had to practice every day, and for reminding her daughters that there’s no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else. We are all deserving of love. So, to that trailblazer, who allowed me to have that. And this. And this. I thank you so much for this opportunity that I share with these extraordinary women and my lover Meryl Streep. Thank you.” Ms. Bullock concluded.
