28th Annual AIDS Walk LA 2012 raises $2,912,209 for AIDS Project LA and 29 other L.A. County AIDS Organizations

On a hot and sunny day and on October 14, 2012 over 30,000 participates came out to raise funds for APLA (AIDS Project Los Angeles). The first fundraiser walk was in 1985, and every year thousands of people collect donations to support APLA and 29 other L.A. County AIDS Organizations. All the efforts paid off this year, AIDS Walk LA raised for APLA $2,912,209 to fight HIV/AIDS. The event was held at the West Hollywood Park located 647 N San Vicente Blvd in West Hollywood, CA 90069 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

“The 30,000 participants who took to the streets today can take pride in the incredible $2,912,209 raised to fight AIDS and lift up the lives those affected by HIV,” said Craig R. Miller, Founder and Producer of the event.  “Thanks to the thousands of dedicated people who walk and fundraise each year, we have made tremendous progress and we are facing a better day in the fight against AIDS,” Miller says. “But we have to remain strong in our response. We have to remain vigilant. And most of all we have to remain visible.”

APLA (AIDS Project Los Angeles) provides care and HIV prevention services throughout Los Angeles. APLA extends to all areas in Los Angeles and has nine food pantries, two dental clinics, and mobile dental van and much more.  Also, prevention education programs are an important part of communities they serve.  They also provide bilingual direct care to those in need.  For more information you can search on their website for details http://apla.org

“As we mark the 31styear of the epidemic in the United States, AIDS Walk Los Angeles remains a critical – and, in fact, the single largest – source of private support for those who rely on APLA’s services,” said Craig E. Thompson, Executive Director of AIDS Project Los Angeles. “With their incredible fundraising, AIDS Walk Los Angeles participants are changing lives, powering prevention efforts, and supporting advocacy work to defend the civil rights of all who live with this still-deadly disease.”

After participates register, they are asked to fundraise to collect donations from family, co-workers and friends.  They set a goal, and get recognized for as much they collect.  When you collect certain amount of funds, you can receive great prices such as an AIDS Walk t-shirt, cap, ear buds or even a hoodie sweatshirt.  When a participant raises $1,000, he/she will receive the entire bundle of gifts. Dedicate supporter such as Cynthia Park, Tom Whitman, and Actress, Pauley Perrette had collected more than $23,000 in contributions. They deserve a hand and appreciation for working so hard in collecting for a great cause.

Schedule of events were organized to make this AIDS Walk possible.  Before the walk, Aerobic warm up got the walkers pumped up to begin their day.  Opening Ceremony followed which celebrities and AIDS walk activists address the crowd to give them encouragement and appreciation for them coming out to support this great organization.

The elected officials and special guests in attendance included:United States Representatives Howard Berman, Adam Schiff, and Maxine WatersCalifornia State Senators Curren D. Price and Rod WrightCalifornia State Assemblymembers Betsy Butler,Isadore Hall, and Ricardo LaraLos Angeles City Councilmembers Paul KoretzPaul KrekorianJan Perry, and Dennis P. ZineLos Angeles City Attorney Carmen TrutanichLos Angeles City AIDS Coordinator Ricky RosalesLos Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy; and West Hollywood City Councilmembers John J. Duran, John Heilman, John D’Amico and West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tempore Abbe Land.

Awesome celebrities such as Christa B. Allen (“Revenge”), Leslie Bibb (“GCB,” “Popular”), Sophia Bush (“Partners”), Drew Carey (“The Price is Right” Host), Barrett Foa (“NCIS: Los Angeles”), Daisy Fuentes (Television Host), Christopher Gorham (“Covert Affairs,” “Popular”), Dot Marie Jones (“Glee”), Pauley Perrette (“NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigation Service”), Andrew Rannells (”The New Normal,” “Girls”), Jai Rodriguez (“Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”), Michael Urie (“Partners”), BeBe Wood (“The New Normal”), the cast of MTV’s “Awkward” including Jillian Rose Reed, Nikki Deloach, Jessica Lu, Molly Tarlov, Bryce JohnsonTamara MelloCarly Pope, and Norm Lewis (“Scandal”) joined forces to make this event interesting. (Please click on the photos to view regular size).

APLA emphasis without the support it would not be possible to provide services needed.  After the speeches and saying thank you to all who contributed the walkers set out at 10:00 a.m. Thousands walked holding signs with their company name or group name on it. School children bundle in groups to support. Dad, moms and their children walked hand in hand. Supporters who lost a love one to AIDS, or knows someone who has AIDS started their walk for encouragement.

Advertising is very important to educate and notify people about AIDS Walk LA.  For many years, AIDS Walk Los Angeles purchased paid advertisement on Big Blue Bus (operated by the City of Santa Monica).  This year Big Blue Bus refuses to promote charity advertisements.  AIDS Walk LA feels this is unfair, and hurts their promotion in getting the word out about the walk.  LA Mayor, Antonio R. Villaraigosa announced he will put advertisements on Los Angeles buses next year.

Providing best wishes to APLA, corporate sponsors contribute with love. This year’s Presenting Sponsor was AHF Pharmacy.  The Grand Sponsors included ABC7, The David Geffen Foundation, Paramount Pictures, Paul Hastings, Time Warner Cable, and Toyota.  Principal Sponsors included Albertsons, Delta Air Lines, Macy’s, Marilyn & Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Vons/Pavilions. Every penny counts, so APLA thanks all supporters and contributors.

A special thank you goes out to AIDS Walk LA management and staff for gathering thousands of people to Los Angeles to announce the importance of this organization, and why they work so hard to help those infected with AIDS. Awareness to all, that anyone can be infected with AIDS, but there is hope. Every year contributions make it possible to educate and provided services. It doesn’t stop here you can always donate by going to http://aidswalk.net/losangeles.  You can make a difference.

MORE: Each day, seven Angelenos are newly infected with HIV.More than 60,000 are already living with the disease, and over 11,000 access APLA’s life-sustaining services, which offer medical care, food, housing support, and other vital necessities to those of lowest income. The agency also provides the county’s largest network of HIV prevention programming, testing and counseling, and robust advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels. AIDS Walk Los Angeles is the single largest source of support for this critical work.

In addition, for many years, AIDS Project Los Angeles has run paidadvertisements on Big Blue Bus (operated by the City of Santa Monica) for AIDS Walk Los Angeles. These ads help educate and engage the public. But this year, the City of Santa Monica has banned these promotions and all other public service messages from charities. While residents of Santa Monica have taken their city to court to fight this absurd policy and preserve free speech, APLA is encouraging supporters to take a stand for the fight against AIDS and againstsuspect government priorities like this one, which favors commercial interests over the public’s interest.

Glee Wins Award at the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards 2011 in Los Angeles

Glee at the 2011 GLAAD AwardsOn Sunday, April 10, 2011 The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) held their 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards which it was presented by Rokk Vodka & Wells Fargo.
Andrew Christian
The event honored Kristin Chenoweth, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt, and the best in television and journalism. The 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards was hosted by Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles, CA.

The purpose of the GLAAD Media Awards are to recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives.  The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD’s work to amplify stories of LGBT people and issues that build support for equality. The event featured a blue red carpet, silent auction and provided cocktails, then later the dinner, awards ceremony and after-party.

Up to 75% OFF

“I’m very grateful to everyone at GLAAD for thinking of me for this honor.” said Robert Greenblatt, NBC Entertainment Chairman.
“I salute all the producers, writers, network executives, and actors who took on the issue and broke ground way before I did — and who continue to do it today.  Many of you are in the room tonight.  I share this award with you.  While we still have a long way to go, we have made great strides both politically and in our media.  May that not only continue, but increase in velocity… because we can help change the way the world thinks about LGBT people, not to mention how LGBT people think about themselves.” Concluded Mr. Greenblatt.
“I want to encourage many people of all faiths to come forward and stand with me.” said Kristin Chenoweth.
“Even if you don’t believe in Jesus the way I do, he did teach love — not just tolerance, but acceptance.  I’m lucky I had parents who adopted me at birth, conservative Southern Baptists who said, ‘You will love everyone the same’…Mostly I would like to thank GLAAD for this amazing, amazing honor.  This is the biggest honor I have ever received.” Concluded Ms. Chenoweth.

Kirsten Dunst presented a Special Recognition award to Bianca “Nikki” Peet, a 17-year-old student from Corpus Christi, Texas, for her efforts to organize a Gay-Straight Alliance at her high school after her principal originally prohibited the group.

oyveymysonisgay“Oy Vey, My Son Is Gay” is the story of the Hirsch’s, a Jewish family living in the North Shore of Long Island, where every Friday night Shirley Hirsch (Lainie Kazan) invites another “perfect” girl for Shabbat dinner in hopes that her son, Nelson (John Lloyd Young), will marry a nice Jewish girl. When Shirley and Martin (Saul Rubinek) once again set him up on a date, Nelson reveals that he is already seeing someone. Shirley and Martin are thrilled and can’t wait to meet the lucky lady.

In a motherly attempt at finding out who her son is dating, Shirley stops by Nelson’s apartment. She is greeted by Angelo Ferraro (Jai Rodriguez), Nelson’s live-in boyfriend, and in order to not divulge Nelson’s secret life, Angelo introduces himself as his decorator. Shirley also meets the gorgeous Sybil (Carmen Electra), Nelson’s neighbor and Playpen magazine centerfold. Shirley believes that Sybil is Nelson’s mysterious girlfriend. She is concerned that Sybil isn’t Jewish but resigns to the fact that if her son is happy, that’s all that matters and she can’t wait for the rest of the family to meet Sybil at an upcoming wedding.

Nelson attempts to tell his mother that he is gay, but Shirley is too busy with her own life to listen to her son. After a long and emotional argument between Nelson and Angelo, Nelson agrees to take Angelo to his cousin’s wedding, instead of Sybil. Halfway through the ceremony Nelson finally breaks the news to his parents that he’s gay. At first, Shirley and Martin are confused and distraught, but when the reality starts to set in they begin to blame one another for Nelsons sexuality.

As Shirley and Martin struggle to accept this, they meet with a psychiatrist, talk with local members of the gay community, Martin goes to a gay bar in an attempt at understanding his son and he even goes as far as to try to get Sybil to sleep with Nelson to make him straight. As a last resort, Shirley and Martin have dinner with Angelos parents, Teresa and Carmine Ferraro (Vincent Pastore), in order to understand their sons lifestyles. Shirley and Teresa have sympathy for one another, unlike Martin and Carmine, who accuse each others son at being the cause of their own sons homosexuality.

Both families continue to try to hide the fact their sons are gay from their friends and co-workers, but when Nelson and Angelo decide to adopt a baby and it makes headline news, the two families must unite to defend their son’s cause. In an emotional confrontation, the families stand up and fight for their gay sons right against opposition. In an emotional victory for the two families and the country, the Hirsch’s and the Ferraro’s not only accept the fact their sons are gay but realize how much they love them.
