24 world and 25 North American premieres, plus first-ever. Advanced Technology Showcase during Press Days
LOS ANGELES, CA - November 12, 2012 – The Los Angeles Auto Show confirmed today that nearly 50 vehicles will debut at the show Nov. 28-29 when it opens for Press Days and Nov. 30-Dec. 9 for the public. Just two weeks away, the show will feature world debuts ranging from electric vehicles to performance and luxury designs from a global array of the world’s top automakers. The number of debuts and strong representation from the world’s key auto manufacturing regions underscore both the rebounding strength of the industry as well as the importance of the Show as a launch venue.
The debut lineup this year promises a compelling mix of the hottest trends and cutting-edge innovations driving today’s resurgent automotive industry. Debuts include world-firsts from Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, as well as European automakers such as BMW, Fiat, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen. Show-goers also will see global unveilings of new designs from Asian brands, including models from Acura, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota.
The debuts also include the latest in-car technologies as well as highlight fuel-efficient, hybrid, electric and alternative fuel vehicles, demonstrating that green continues to be a dominant shade of innovation in the industry. Overall, there will be two dozen all-electric or plug-in electric models at the Show, at least a dozen clean-diesel vehicles and nearly 20 vehicles achieving 40-plus mpg with highly advanced four-cylinder gasoline engines. Coverage of these technology-laden vehicles promises to be extensive thanks to a total of 25 planned press conferences and media registered from over 50 countries.
“The auto industry in North America is experiencing its best annual sales rate since 2008, and this positive growth can clearly be seen in the number of debuts, broad range of vehicles and transformative technologies on display at the show,” said Andy Fuzesi, general manager of the LA Auto Show.
Underscoring the L.A. region’s status as the largest luxury and performance market in the country, of the 50 debuts slated, at least a dozen will come from these categories. Planned bows in this segment include the world debut of the 2013 Acura RLX luxury sedan, the North American debut of the BMW i8 Spyder hybrid roadster concept as well as an undisclosed world debut from the Bavarian marque. The Show will also play host to the highly anticipated North American debut of the Jaguar F-TYPE convertible sportscar as well as a yet-to-be-disclosed world debut from Jaguar. Mercedes-Benz will have a total of four debuts including the world debut of the SLS AMG Black Series and one yet-to-be-named world debut. Ultra-luxury nameplate Bentley will be showing a North American debut and rounding out the category, a hotly-rumored world debut is slated from Porsche as well as the North American debut of the 911 Carrera 4.
The upcoming year looks to be a banner year for vehicle efficiency. According to AutoTrader.com, total shopper interest for alternative fuel and highly fuel-efficient models is up 54 percent so far in 2012. Mini USA will also compete in this segment with the North American debut of the Paceman and the Clubvan. Another big statement will come from Volkswagen, which will have the 2013 Beetle Convertible on hand for its world debut. Asian automakers have also chosen LA as the ideal venue for multiple unveilings. Hyundai will debut a longer, seven passenger version of its Santa Fe crossover along with an as yet undisclosed world debut, while Honda also has a mystery world debut planned. More unrevealed world debuts are planned by Nissan, Toyota and Subaru. The Mazda6 mid-sized sports sedan will have its North American debut at the Show while Kia will present the Forte sedan for its world debut. The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander will also be making its North American debut with enhanced fuel-efficiency and advanced safety technologies including a lane departure warning system.
In addition to the notable debuts this year, there will be a Press-Days only showcase highlighting the transformative technologies increasingly embedded in these vehicles. Latest “connected car” technologies highlighted during Press Days Nov. 28 & 29
LOS ANGELES, CA - October 30, 2012 – Technology is fueling changes in the automotive industry like never before. Automakers are increasingly challenged to keep pace with today’s connected consumers who are tethered to their mobile devices and expecting advanced safety features to be more commonplace. In response, automakers are now partnering with some of the most prominent names in data, mobile and processor technologies to create seamless solutions so consumers can continually access information, without taking their hands off the wheel. Helping keep the industry current on the rapid evolution of the connected car, the LA Auto Show will debut a Press-Days-only showcase of the latest in-vehicle technologies on Nov. 28 and 29, 2012.
The LA Auto Show Advanced Technology Showcase, presented by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, focuses on the expanding list of applications and solutions now being designed into vehicles. The Showcase participants are helping transform not only the way consumers think about transportation, but also how these advancements are helping mitigate the issues of distracted driving through hands-free voice commands and vehicle controls as well as autonomous safety measures.
Whether it is Intel® technology enabling seamless access to mobile devices or calculating automated ways for vehicles to avoid traffic jams, Qualcomm Technologies Inc.’s cutting-edge embedded modems powering alerts for roadside emergency services, or even a way to find the cheapest gas based on a driver’s location thanks to Scout™ by Telenav, today’s solutions are road-tested and ready. In-vehicle entertainment is also part of this evolution, with solutions such as Livio Connect enabling entertainment on a global scale by giving drivers access to apps like TuneIn, or Sprint’s unique component integration solutions that make dashboards more like smartphones and tablets.
Highlighted below are the companies and technologies involved in the Showcase. Each represents an important part of the solution driving change and a safer, more efficient and connected driving experience.
Consumer demand is driving integration of the car into our digital lives. The move is fueling the emergence of the connected car and the promise of more enjoyable, productive, intuitive and safe experiences for drivers and passengers alike. Imagine running late for an appointment during peak traffic, automatically the car recommends a new route to guide you away from your usual-but now congested-route. Intel’s technology also allows interaction between smartphones and vehicles in more useful ways. By using in-car connectivity, along with the cameras and sensors already in your car, the car can notify you via smartphone if it has been hit in a parking lot. Additionally, near-field communications or a barcode can be used to securely pair asmartphone with your car, enabling your smartphone to become a virtual key for remote keyless entry to your car.
To make these new driving experiences possible, Intel is utilizing its expertise in personal computing, software, security and cloud computing, as well as making significant investments in research and product development. Intel is also working with leading automakers including BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and Toyota to enhance the in-vehicle experience and bring advanced in-vehicle technologies to market.
At the LA Auto Show, Intel is showcasing a connected car driving experience concept in which Press Days participants can explore up to three experiences: car enthusiast, family or commuter. While interacting with the demo, participants can ‘test drive’ in-vehicle features of the intelligent car including a system that verifies the vehicle owner, designs personalized navigation routes, locates personal contacts nearby and even updates your social media networks.
Qualcomm Technologies Inc., a global leader in advanced 3G and 4G/LTE wireless modems that are combined with high performance mobile application processors, and a large supplier of wireless modem chipsets to the auto industry, is helping to enable high-speed data access in vehicles resulting in a rich media experience. Qualcomm Technologies’ unique combination of high speed connectivity and processing performance is enabling movies to be streamed to the kids in the rear seat, a world’s worth of audio and internet radio programming, and automated telematics that assist drivers in ways ranging from sending an automated request for roadside emergency service in the case of a crash to receiving a reminder for scheduled maintenance.
With more than a decade of experience in the automotive industry, Qualcomm Technologies continues to provide the underlying wireless and application processor technology that allows automakers and their strategic partners to create new, breakthrough communications enabled applications and services. Displays at the Showcase include the company’s high performance processor based on Qualcomm Snapdragon™ platforms and its combination Qualcomm Gobi™ wireless modem/application processor platforms that enable consumers to remotely activate controls in their vehicle (such as starting the vehicle and turning on the A/C before entering the car on a hot day), monitor vehicle energy usage (particularly useful for EV “smart grid” applications), use advanced location-based navigation systems and apps, and of course, stream the latest blockbuster to rear seat movie fans.
Sprint makes its appearance at the LA Auto Show with a global announcement and press conference during the Show’s official Press Days. The Tier 1 communications company is a leader in machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity, notably in telematics solutions for transportation. On the strength of this position, in August 2012, the Chrysler Group selected Sprint as a strategic partner to enable its Uconnect Access in-vehicle communications system. Sprint executives will be at the LA Auto Show to debut the company’s unique global turnkey solution for automotive manufacturers as they take connected services to the next level.
In addition to component integration and ecosystem management, Sprint aims to help automakers become more effective providers of consumer communications. During the press conference, Sprint will showcase how automotive manufacturers can affordably draw on its consumer wireless capabilities to extend a rich mobility experience to their cars and trucks. Sprint’s objective is to make dashboard technology as simple, intuitive and appealing as smartphones and tablets.
Sprint will also highlight how this can be done in a rich and highly personalized way that fully accounts for the special requirements of drivers and passengers. As part of this innovative program, the company will discuss how auto manufacturers can build stronger customer loyalty through deeper, ongoing consumer relationships.
With Scout it is about the destination as well as the journey along the way. Scout, available on both iOS and Android, includes voice-guided GPS navigation, speech recognition, traffic rerouting, personalized My Dashboard with commute times, offline navigation and more. In addition, Scout is the first (and only) app that works across the web, phone and in-car systems-offering users an easy and consistent discovery and navigation experience no matter where they are.
With the recent introduction of Scout for AppLink, which integrates the popular smartphone navigation app with voice and vehicle controls through the Ford SYNC AppLink platform, drivers now have access to the app’s full suite of features in a safe, responsible manner. For example, directions are audible through the vehicle’s speakers and turn-by-turn prompts are displayed on the radio display. The road-worthy functions, available to drivers when their smartphone is paired to AppLink, includes access to features such as location-based searches for the lowest gas prices and other points of interest such as restaurants, saving and sharing favorites, and getting live traffic updates for a safe and smart commute. Scout for AppLink will be on display at the Showcase and throughout the run of the show for public days in a 2013 Ford Mustang, so attendees can experience for themselves how the app integrates with the vehicle.
The connected car means many things, including the ability to bring advanced entertainment solutions into vehicles. Thanks to the integration of 3G/4G mobile networks, a driver’s access to rich media ranging from movies for the rear seat to multiple streaming music services is almost limitless. Some of the most exciting applications are radio and music apps, which provide drivers greater listening choices. Livio is a new and important mover in this space, underscored by the recent announcement that GM will incorporate the company’s technology in a solution that will allow Chevy Spark and the Chevy Sonic RS owners to enjoy the popular TuneIn music smartphone app in vehicles equipped with GM’s MyLink Radio. Essentially, the Livio Connect middleware software enables hardware such as the Spark’s installed head unit and radio to connect with smartphone apps like TuneIn and interact with one another. This integration also allows drivers to control the app in a hands-free manner, only using voice and vehicle controls. In the application on display at the Show, the Livio Connect technology will be installed in a Chevy Spark equipped with MyLink Radio to demonstrate how drivers can enjoy any of the 70,000 stations from around the world featured on the mobile TuneIn app.
Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC)
With so many systems and manufacturers in the mix bringing the connected car and its multiple features into reality, it’s hugely important that a standard be created so all parties involved are on the same page. No real advancement could happen without it. Smartphones from various manufacturers need to be able to integrate with center console displays from others, while automakers have to ensure that all these devices embed efficiently in their vehicles. To that end, members of the CCC have created MirrorLink™, a technology standard for controlling a nearby smartphone via steering wheel and dashboard buttons and screens. The organization has proven to be a success with membership including more than 80 percent of the world’s automakers and more than 70 percent of the world’s smartphone vendors, as well as related hardware manufacturers such as the makers of display technologies. The list reads like a who’s who of these industries and includes companies such as GM, Toyota, Volkswagen, LG, Nokia, Panasonic and Alpine. Pursuing its goal of ensuring a safe driving environment where driver distraction is eliminated and entertainment and functionality maximized, the Consortium has already garnered the cooperation of these global brands to create MirrorLink version 1.0 and its requisite authorized test labs. At the LA Auto Show, Press Days attendees will get an insider’s view of how MirrorLink works to ensure smartphones, center console displays and the latest intelligent vehicles can function seamlessly together ensuring the success and growth of the connected car.

October 25, 2012 by News Desk
Filed under Autos, Awards, Business News, Consumer News, Environment, Events, Featured, Money, News, Technology
Winner to be Revealed at LA Auto Show Press Conference on November 29.
LOS ANGELES, CA - October 25, 2012 – Five exceptional vehicles have been named finalists for Green Car Journal’s 2013 Green Car of the Year®. For the eighth consecutive year, the Green Car of the Year will recognize and honor environmental leadership in the automotive field. The winner will be announced at a press conference during the LA Auto Show Press Days on Nov. 29. This year’s finalists include the Dodge Dart Aero, Ford C-MAX, Ford Fusion, Mazda CX-5 SkyACTIV and the Toyota Prius c.
“This is a very exciting time for the Green Car of the Year program,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal and president of the Green Car Institute. “For two decades now, Green Car Journal has documented the ‘greening’ of the auto industry, from a time of mere concepts and demonstration programs to today, when the sheer number of environmentally positive production vehicles available to consumers is just eye-opening.”
Cogan points out that the shift toward ‘green’ vehicles is great for new car buyers who want to drive cleaner and more efficiently, while still experiencing the joy of driving. “What’s tougher these days is narrowing down the universe of great candidates to a field of five nominees, as we have today,” said Cogan.
This ‘greenest’ field-of-five – representing not only the five finalists for the 2013 Green Car of the Year award but also Green Car Journal’s distinguished ‘Top 5 Green Cars for 2013′ – underscores the evolving auto industry’s increasing focus on efficiencies and tailpipe/CO2 emissions. The high mpg Dodge Dart Aero and Mazda CX-5 SkyACTIV show that conventionally-powered, internal combustion vehicles can indeed compete with the efficiencies of hybrids. Toyota’s Prius c continues this automaker’s tradition of offering all-new, high mpg hybrid models under the Prius name. The Ford C-MAX and Fusion illustrate how mainstream models can present drivers multiple high-efficiency choices – with the C-MAX offering both hybrid and plug-in hybrid iterations, and the Fusion offering these power options, plus fuel-efficient EcoBoost variants. Importantly, all are affordable mass-market products that provide drivers full functionality and mainstream appeal, paving the way for making a difference in fuel use and overall emissions in daily driving.
The winner will be selected by an esteemed jury comprised of the nation’s top environmental leaders, including Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune, Ocean Futures Society president Jean-Michel Cousteau, and Global Green USA president Matt Petersen, plus Tonight Show host and auto enthusiast Jay Leno and Green Car Journal staff.

Vehicle Electrification and Other Green Advances Surge Ahead at the LA Auto Show
October 23, 2012 by News Desk
Filed under Business News, cars, Events, Featured, News, US News, Your Money
Battery and plug-in EVs as well as clean-diesel and fuel-efficient, 4-cylinder vehicles, all on the rise.
LOS ANGELES, CA - October 23, 2012 – Green continues to be a dominant shade of innovation in the automotive sector as 2013 looks to be a banner year for vehicle efficiency. According to AutoTrader.com, total shopper interest for alternative fuel and highly fuel-efficient models is up 54 percent so far in 2012. This year’s LA Auto Show® reflects this trend and will host significant debuts across all green categories. There will be two dozen all-electric or plug-in electric models at the Show, at least a dozen clean-diesel vehicles and nearly 20 vehicles achieving 40-plus mpg with highly advanced four-cylinder gasoline engines.
Automakers are incorporating multiple approaches—-even within a single model line—-to reach new benchmarks, and all categories of vehicles are well represented. Everything from luxury performance models, such as the BMW i8 Spyder plug-in hybrid to the Chevrolet Spark micro car are trending green.
“The green technology innovations demonstrated by automakers around the world continue to attract the attention of the car-buying public,” said Andy Fuzesi, general manager of the LA Auto Show. “We’re excited to be able to provide one of the world’s best stages for manufacturers to display their very latest achievements that match virtually every budget.”
Hybrids and Electric Vehicles
The race for the lowest-emission automobile is hottest in the electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid categories. During the first six months of 2012, U.S. hybrid car sales increased 63.5 percent, while the overall automobile market increased 14.9 percent.
This year’s Show will feature three electric vehicle debuts, including the all new Fiat 500e. However, it is the number of electric and plug-in vehicles available to the consumer that has grown most dramatically in the last few years. New releases at the Show from Ford alone include the 2013 Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid, the Fusion Energi plug-in and the Focus Electric. Honda will have its new Accord plug-in hybrid, which joins the ranks of existing electrics and plug-ins from Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Coda, Fisker, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota and Smart.
Clean Diesel
Once shunned as a polluting underperformer, diesel is back in a big way. During the first six months of 2012, clean-diesel automobile sales in the United States increased 27.5 percent, outpacing the overall auto market by 12 percent. As clean-diesel technology continues to accelerate, bringing an increasing number of vehicles to market, particularly with European brands, clean-diesel will give hybrids a run for the money. Audi is a case in point. The company has expanded its focus on TDI vehicles and will make some specific news on that front at this year’s LA Auto Show.
Volkswagen shows equal enthusiasm for modern diesel technology, offering six turbocharged clean-diesel vehicles, which thanks to advanced engineering and “greener” fuels, routinely deliver EPA-rated mileage estimates of over 40 mpg on the highway. Volkswagen’s latest diesel entry slated to debut at the LA Auto Show includes the 2013 Beetle Cabriolet, which will be available in both diesel and gasoline engine configurations. Volkswagen is even testing renewable diesel from fuel maker Solazyme in some of its TDI products.
Mercedes-Benz continues to expand its clean-diesel offerings in the U.S. with a plan to bring a total of eight clean-diesel models to the states by 2014, including the GLK250 BlueTEC, which will be on display at the Show and in showrooms by Spring 2013. Mercedes-Benz has also invested heavily in start-stop technology to further improve efficiency. Nearly 40 percent of its vehicles will have the fuel conserving feature, which is a 12 percent gain over last year.
Four-cylinder Forecast
Four-cylinder gasoline-powered models are also breaking stereotypes. A new generation of vehicles pairing performance and up-market styling with fuel-sipping EPA numbers near or over 40 mpg are becoming more prevalent. Four-cylinder cars once seen as under-powered and underwhelming in design, certainly do not fit that mold today. New nameplates such as the new Dodge Dart Aero, which delivers aggressive styling with a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission, returns 41 mpg on the highway. Ford’s new Fiesta, making its debut at the Show, also delivers sporty styling combined with excellent fuel economy. In fact, Ford is offering eight vehicles that deliver 40 mpg or better by year’s end, double the number in 2011. The automaker’s fuel-efficient EcoBoost powertrains have become a company mainstay and make appearances in vehicles such as the 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium.
More performance-oriented small cars that still deliver impressive fuel economy are on the rise including the Fiat 500 Abarth Cabriolet making its debut at the Show. Featuring aggressive rally styling and a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing 170 lb.-ft. of torque, the vehicle still manages an EPA rating of 34 mpg highway. Also, Mini will unveil its new Paceman also boasting both performance and excellent fuel economy.

Launch of new website optimized for mobile devices gives attendees and exhibitors new ways to connect, inform and share
LOS ANGELES, CA - October 11, 2012 - The Los Angeles Auto Show today entered a new era of connectivity with the launch of its new website, redesigned from the ground-up with the increasingly mobile consumer in mind. Integrating the very latest platforms and functions available on today’s smartphones and tablets, the new mobile-optimized site is a direct response to the rapidly evolving way information is shared and consumer purchasing decisions are initiated and cultivated.
A staggering 96 percent of smartphone users have used their devices as a shopping tool and 80 percent are frequent social networkers, according to a new Google report, so the online experience needs to be seamless whether using a smartphone, tablet or a desktop computer. Nearly half of the U.S. population now has a smartphone1, and Forrester Research predicts that tablets will become most users’ primary computing device within the next four years.
In order to encourage increased sharing and usage of the new built-in social media tools, the site will feature more digital content than before, including an increased number of photos and videos. With three quarters of smartphone users watching mobile video1,the new site seamlessly connects with the LA Auto Show YouTube channel and, for the first time, will feature a video of every press conference that takes place on Press Days.
The redesigned site is also well suited for the new generation of connected vehicles, which enable in-vehicle access to information, social networks and entertainment. With automakers bringing an increasing number of these vehicles to market, the new LA Auto Show site becomes even more relevant as a tool to keep mobile consumers engaged while on the move via social media platforms. According to Intel, automobiles will be among the top three fastest-growing market segments for connected devices and Internet content by 2014.
“This is an investment on our part that benefits both attendees and exhibitors,” said Andy Fuzesi, LA Auto Show general manager. “Visitors now have access to more information and the ability to easily share content before, during and after the Show, while exhibitors benefit from the built-in viral nature and increased brand advocacy opportunities.”
The redesign was managed and implemented by iconmobile a mobile design and development agency with consummate experience in the automotive segment. As a company, iconmobile works closely with brands such as BMW, P&G, Microsoft, Samsung and others to create and develop connected digital solutions in a way that is both personal and contextual.
”This partnership showcases a company that is truly vested in connecting with their audience in the most direct and engaging way possible, using devices people love most and always have with them,” said Chris Mann, VP Business Development, iconmobile. “LA Auto Show has built a foundation for the future, which will further enhance the show-going and showcasing experience in the coming years for visitors, press attendees and exhibitors alike.”

Toyota’s Jim Lentz to Open 2012 LA Auto Show with MPG Keynote
LOS ANGELES, CA - September 19, 2012 – Jim Lentz, president and CEO of Toyota Motor Sales, USA, will kick off the Los Angeles Auto Show Press Days with the Motor Press Guild (MPG) keynote address on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012 at 8 a.m. The MPG presentation and Lentz’s address are open to all credentialed media attending the Show’s Press Days Nov. 28 and 29, and will conclude with a Q-and-A session.
As the global auto industry continues to face dramatic change and enormous challenges, Mr. Lentz will address how Toyota is facing a new automotive era and collaborating with other automakers and other industries to adapt to new conditions. Lentz also will discuss a global shift in Toyota’s thinking as the company’s North American operations gain expertise and the authority to develop new vehicles entirely in North America, starting with the new Avalon.
Lentz, who has been with Toyota for three decades, has the distinction of being the first American to serve in the position of CEO of Toyota Motor Sales, USA. He was named to the position earlier this year. The industry veteran also sits on the company’s board of directors, is the senior vice president of Toyota Motor North America (TMA), the company’s operations holding company, and serves as a managing officer for the parent company, Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) in Japan.
“The many capacities in which Jim Lentz has served with Toyota makes him an ideal source to provide keen insights into the current dynamics of our industry. We look forward to hearing his perspective on how Toyota is navigating this rapidly changing marketplace,” said Laura Burstein, president of the Motor Press Guild.
Under Lentz’s leadership, Toyota Motor Sales, USA is currently enjoying a more than 40 percent growth in sales over last year while simultaneously maintaining a leading role in new technologies including fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid designs and connected car platforms such as Toyota’s Entune.

Automotive Design Studios Envision Law Enforcement’s Road Ahead

Design studios from around the world to compete in the ninth annual Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge: Highway Patrol Vehicle – 2025
LOS ANGELES, CA - September 5, 2012 - The pace of change in society accelerates every year, with breakthrough technologies and rapidly developing countries constantly rewriting the rules in a global economy. How this translates into life on the road for the general public is open to interpretation, but for law enforcement, it is a mission-critical assignment. To better patrol our roads and effectively “protect and serve,” the future highway patrol vehicle will have to be designed with an entirely new set of considerations, including advanced powertrains, alternative fuels, telemetrics and new sizes to effectively navigate dynamic urban environments.
This year’s Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge asks a highly competitive field of major auto manufacturer design studios, from the U.S., Germany and Japan, to solve this puzzle and create the ultimate law enforcement patrol vehicle for the year 2025. So far, design studios from Bentley, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai and Subaru have accepted the challenge to use their innovation and insight to explore creative solutions as they contend for this annual design honor.
“One of the most difficult yet important tasks in design is looking into the future to envision and create the trends and tools that haven’t been imagined,” said Chuck Pelly, director of Design Los Angeles and partner in The Design Academy, Inc. “Adding the element of law enforcement to this year’s competition creates another layer of importance that makes a challenge equal to the level of our participants.”
The winning design will be announced Nov. 29 during an event at the LA Auto Show Press Days. Judging criteria will be based upon various factors including: consideration of future needs for advanced technology, speed and agility on future freeway systems; creativity of the solution; meeting a specific region’s emission standards; and environmental sensitivity, including maintenance and recyclability. All entries will be unveiled online at LAautoshow.com in early November.
Entries will be judged by Tom Matano, executive director, School of Industrial Design at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University; Imre Molnar, provost and chief academic officer at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies; and Stewart Reed, chair of Transportation Design at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design. This year’s guest judge, Bruce Meyer, is a board member of the California Highway Patrol 11-99 Foundation, which provides emergency benefits to CHP employees and the members of their families in times of crisis. Mr. Meyer is perhaps better known as a high-profile collector, former racer and past chairman of the Petersen Automotive Museum.
The Design Challenge is sponsored by Faurecia, the world’s sixth-largest automotive supplier specializing in automotive seating, emissions control technologies, interior systems and auto exteriors, as well as Yokohama Tire, which works closely with auto manufacturers in the U.S., Europe and Japan to develop tires for the latest concept vehicles. Other sponsors that make Design Los Angeles possible include, Dassault Systemes, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry (INDA) and Lacks Enterprises.
About the Design Challenge:
The Design Challenge takes place annually during the LA Auto Show Press Days, Nov. 28-29, 2012. For each of the past nine years, a new Design Challenge theme is chosen and the major automotive design studios showcase their talents, competing against one another to further explore new ideas in automotive design. The LA Auto Show Press Days hosts the largest gathering of design professionals in North America for a variety of design-focused activities including a Designers’ Night party that brings together design industry leaders from around the world.

More Than 40 Vehicle Debuts Anticipated for the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show
On Wednesday, July 11, 2012 – The Los Angeles Auto Show announced today that more than 40 vehicles are anticipated to debut at the Show during the 2012 Press Days, held Nov. 28-29. With four and a half months until the Show, it is noteworthy that at least 20 world debuts have already been confirmed by automakers. This breaking news, as well as other automotive trends, will be unveiled to a global audience consisting of media from more than 50 countries.
The debut lineup this year also promises a compelling mix of the hottest trends and cutting-edge innovations driving today’s resurgent automotive industry, including world firsts from Chevrolet as well as European automakers such as BMW, Fiat and Volkswagen. Show-goers also will see global unveilings of new designs from Asian brands, including models from Acura, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan and Toyota.
Green and alternative fuel technologies, such as hybrids and all-electric vehicles, will be featured in several world debuts at the Show. There also will be an increasing number of high-mileage internal combustion vehicles, including clean diesel, on display. Additionally, several automakers will unveil emerging technologies that are dramatically changing the modern driving experience and making it safer.
These technology-laden vehicles will share the media spotlight with a well-represented lineup of luxury and performance models underscoring the L.A. region’s status as the largest market for these segments in the country. Of the 40 debuts slated, at least a dozen will come from these two categories, including unveilings from the likes of Acura, Bentley, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and Porsche.
“As the first major North American show of the season, L.A. sets the tone for 2013 and we expect that automakers will pull out all the stops to excite new-car buyers. In virtually every category from the greenest electric vehicle to high-horsepower performance models, the technological advancements we are seeing today eclipse all previous automotive eras,” said Andy Fuzesi, general manager, L.A. Auto Show.
With California established as a global center for alternative fuel and advanced technology innovations, it should come as no surprise that the L.A. Auto Show will be a prime venue for breaking news on all the latest developments. The entirely new Automotive Technology Showcase, presented by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, is a Press Days expo designed to connect automotive technology companies with automakers, media, analysts, and other potential customers and partners. It will serve as a one-stop dedicated showcase covering advancements such as digital speech recognition, accident avoidance technology, navigation systems, real-time traffic data and solutions designed to mitigate distracted driving concerns.
Supporting the Showcase will be an expanded Ride and Drive called the Green & Advanced Technology Ride and Drive. This Press Days’ event will include both “green” vehicles as well as those featuring in-car advancements such as automatic park assist, radar-based object detection systems and driver assist technologies. The Show’s “green” credibility is further sustained with the Green Car Journal’s annual Green Car of the Year®and Nielsen Automotive Green Marketer of the Year awards.
