Fashion Trends for Fall 2012

This fall in fashion is a mix of trends from opposite ends of the spectrum: Fur-collared, brocaded elegance and minimalist military chic, diaphanous white dresses and leather matrix gear, leather-accented riding accessories and tiny florals. Yet each of these seemingly disparate trends is completely fall appropriate. Buyers will have a wide range of trends to pick and choose from for their own wardrobes. The wide range of styles this fall necessitates a guide to create a singular fall style, since the choices are anything but uniform.

Refined accessories in exaggerated shapes, such as oversized shawls and statement hats populate fall collections. Designers like Mark Jacobs have co-opted the grandma look and put a high-fashion spin on it, yielding outfits worthy of tea time. Extra-large hats, brooches and furs have drawn comparisons to British folkloric fashion, from Charles Dickens to the Queen. This look is feminine, bold but ladylike. One fall staple that could easily go over into winter are the heavy, structured coats. Edwardian accessories, brocades and knits are part of a rich but refined palate for fall 2012.

Another aristocratic trend from the fall runways are sporting clothes. Leather accents in tan and oxblood are ubiquitous, as are plaids, tweeds and herringbone. Reds and oranges are popular at Michael Kors while Ralph Lauren leans towards earth tones. Both collections could blend into fall scenery, from the bright fallen leaves of New England to the wilderness. Fair Isle sweaters and American heritage knits were a staple of the outdoor trend this fall.

Black and white monochromes were each a more cosmopolitan trend on the fall runways. Leather outfits worthy of the matrix contrasted with white knits layered with airy accents. Minimalists and urbanites should appreciate the minimalistic look. Black leather trench coats from Alexander Wang and architectural looks from DKNY would be at home in New York. Other New York designers put a new twist on winter white, bringing the look into fall. Monochromatic whites are a contrast to the ubiquitous black the city is famous for. Derek Lam provides white alternatives to the LBD while Proenza Schouler gives the pantsuit a head-to-toe whitewash. The minimalistic black and white looks are a foil for fall’s more ornate trends.

Another spare trend this fall is minimalistic military. Tailored jackets in shades of navy and olive were paired with straight skirts and belts. The look was less flashy renaissance Napoleon than modern uniform. Derek Lam puts an interesting twist on the military look, pairing a white fur coat cut in army style with a belt, white tailored menswear shorts, and gold shoes. More staid looks populated the runway at Elizabeth and James. Tailored looks reminiscent of military uniforms may be fall’s most streamlined style.

Minimalist or ornate, military or Edwardian, fall’s trends are varied enough to suit a wide range of personal styles.
