gus harper bwAbout Gus Harper:
There is a strong tendency in discussing art produced since World War II to attach or compare it to movements promoted in New York. And when I first viewed the paintings of Gus Harper, I immediately compared them to Georgia O’Keefe and Pop art. Like O’Keefe, Harper has magnified the recognizable into an abstract form. O’Keefe in her best work finds geological landscapes in skulls and the folds of flowers. Hers is a desiccated view of the world, a reduction to the desert’s muted colors, sand-scoured forms. Harper’s oil paintings also find landscapes within natural objects but his reflect southern California’s abundance. The landscapes within his fruits and flowers are the frothing surf of the Pacific Ocean, the uplift of clouds hitting the mountains framing Los Angeles. The roses look starched and ready for the Rose Bowl parade. The minimalism implied by her compositions is the opposite of his use of a grid of small paintings to fill entire rooms. Like Pop art, he has focused on ordinary objects, using repetition and the flattened quality of advertising as a means of structuring the panels. Marco Livingstone’s description of Oldenburg’s work also nicely fits Harper’s paintings, “Like the best of Pop, their effect is to awaken us to the strangeness of the ordinary, to present the most routine encumbrances of our daily lives as almost miraculous apparitions.”* Unlike Pop art, though, his is not a critique of capitalism or consumerism. His is not a detached view of the world. He has replaced irony with celebration.

The vibrant reds and yellows, the stylization of the roses in fact have more in common with the great muralists of Mexico than the sleek commentaries of New York Pop. Diego Rivera frequently commented that he wanted his art to improve the life of ordinary people. While certainly not a political activist like Rivera, Harper also wants to enhance life, wants to share his ability “to get his juices going” with others and not just as viewers. His paintings like “Dynamic Gold and White Rose Grid” are deliberately created in panels which the collector can rearrange, infusing a sense of play.

The artist states it clearly: “I think how we view the world impacts everything around us. My goal is to share the spectacular in the everyday. The simple, direct approach often tells a profound story.” For information visit Gus Harper Studio website at http://gusharperart.com

City of Santa Monica Bans AIDS Walk Los Angeles 2012 Ads from Big Blue Bus

September 11, 2012 by
Filed under Breaking News, Charity News, Events, Government, Legal, News

City of Santa Monica refuses to allow public service messages from charities on their Big Blue Bus line. Issue up for discussion at Tuesday’s City Council Meeting.

For the past five years, AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) has purchased paid advertisements on Big Blue Bus for its annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles. The City of Santa Monica is now refusing these ads and all other public service messages from charities.

“This absurd new policy targets not only AIDS Walk Los Angeles ads, but all other non-profit ads which help foster community spirit and provide valuable information to the public,” said Craig E. Thompson, Executive Director of AIDS Project Los Angeles. “Santa Monica city leaders are in effect providing an economic advantage to corporate interests and a disadvantage to community advocates. We’re calling on our supporters to join us in speaking out against this twisted set of priorities.”

Coincidentally, Craig Miller, Founder and Producer of AIDS Walk Los Angeles, is a 29-year resident of Santa Monica.

“I love Santa Monica. I’ve lived here my whole adult life,” said Miller. “I don’t believe we are a city that says ‘yes’ to advertising jumbo-sized sodas, but ‘no’ to advertising breast cancer awareness, initiatives to keep Santa Monica Bay clean, or the fight against AIDS.”

Miller also pointed out that the current banning of AIDS-related advertisements troublingly recalls the early years of the epidemic, when those promoting HIV/AIDS awareness were hampered by the government. “All these years later, to be dealing with this discrimination again, just shows that whoever changed this policy has no concept of history, and no concept of the important role that organizations like AIDS Project Los Angeles play in society,” Miller continued. “And they really don’t know the residents of our City, because no Santa Monican I know would ever approve of this short-sighted ban on valuable public service messages,” He added.

Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom is scheduled to introduce a motion at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting designed to immediately overturn this discriminatory policy. APLA has encouraged residents of Santa Monica to phone City Hall and also attend the meeting to let the City Council know that this policy is unfair, arbitrary, a possible violation of free speech, and puts AIDS Walk Los Angeles and other non-profits at a further disadvantage in a marketplace that is already saturated with commercial messages.

WHEN:
Tuesday, September 11, 2012
5:30 PM

WHERE:
Santa Monica City Hall
1685 Main Street #200
Santa Monica, CA 90401

WHO:
Representatives of APLA scheduled to attend Tuesday’s City Council meeting will include APLA Director of Government Affairs Phil Curtis; APLA Board Member and West Hollywood City Councilman, John Duran; and APLA Board Secretary Carl Baker.

Craig Thompson (Executive Director of APLA) and
Craig Miller (Founder/Producer of AIDS Walk Los Angeles) are available for interviews.

MORE:

Supporters are encouraged to call Mayor Richard Bloom and the Santa Monica City Council to voice their opinions about this discriminatory and unreasonable policy.

  • Call Santa Monica City Hall at 310.458.8201
  • Ask for Mayor Richard Bloom’s office or the City Council office

Feature Film The Ferret Squad to Film Trailer in Langley, British Columbia, Canada

Family Film About Kids Rescuing Ferrets In California Shooting in Langley.
On Friday, August 3, 2012 — Canadian film director, Alison Parker, is bringing her cast and crew for the upcoming feature film The Ferret Squad to Langley, British Columbia, Canada to film a promotional trailer for the film, which is slated to begin production this month.

The trailer will be filmed over four days, August 6, 7, 8 & 9 and the final product will run approximately three minutes. The promotional trailer will then be shown to potential investors in the hopes that they will want to contribute to the making of the feature.

“We will be filming at locations in Langley and Fort Langley for the trailer. I’m especially excited about filming in Fort Langley. It’s a great little town with a lot of character and a wide variety of shooting locations, houses, scenery, etc. It’s a very popular place to film. The first day we went on a location scout, we saw them filming Once Upon a Time. The second time we went, they were filming Psych,” says Parker.

The Ferret Squad is a family-friendly feature that tells the story of Max Jones, played by Jake and Jasper: A Ferret Tale star Connor Stanhope (Connor also played the role of young “Lex Luthor” on the TV series Smallville) In the story, Max is a teenage boy who must move to California with his father, Ben (Canadian Award Winning Actor Chad Willett, The Locket, Joan of Arc); he then realizes that Digger, his pet ferret, won’t be able to come along because ferrets are illegal. Max finds a way to sneak Digger across the border, and thinks his troubles are over. In his new home state, Max meets and joins forces with a group of quirky kids known as “The Ferret Squad” who spend their summer days rescuing and fostering illegal ferrets. When Animal Control plans to destroy some confiscated ferrets, Max and the Ferret Squad go on a desperate mission to save the poor animals by transporting them across the border with the law and their parents in hot pursuit.

The movie also boasts an impressive cast that includes, in addition to Stanhope and Willett, Canadian Award Winning actress Julia Benson (best known as “Lt Vanessa James” on the TV Series SGU Stargate Universe), Canadian Award Winning Actor Cainan Weibe, whose acting credits include roles in The Sandlot 3 (“Ryan”), Sucker Punch (“Tommy Boy”), The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (“Newborn Boy”), Falling Skies (“Marshall”), and Diary of a Wimpy Kid (“Quentin”), Eric McNamee (“Gus” on the Cartoon Network’s “Level Up”), Clive Holloway (“Maurice” on the UK TV Show “Beaver Falls”), Sean Michael Kyer (who has appeared on the TV shows “Alcatraz”, “Fringe” and “Continuum”), Dylan Schmid (“Baelfire” on the TV Series “Once Upon A Time”), Sierra Pitkin (Juno), Jake and Jasper: A Ferret Tale alumnus Blu Mankuma (“Harry Helmsley”, 2012), Award Winning Canadian Actress Gabrielle Rose (Excited), Michael Roberds (“Uncle Fester” on the TV Series The New Addams Family), Conner Dwelly (“Young Patricia Swan” on Smallville and “Morraine” on ABC TV’s Once Upon A Time), breakout star Emma Tremblay (will be starring with Matt Damon in the upcoming film Elysium) and Falcor the Ferret (Jake and Jasper: A Ferret Tale).

EDITORIAL: Gay Marriage = A Right, A Privilege, A Great Revenue or a Bad Thing in Our Society?

August 1, 2012 by

In what century or decade do we live? Don’t we all know that our society is changing every day?
Is the USA Constitution a must follow rule?
Decision makers should let the States make the decision to legalize gay marriage. By allowing gay marriage, this will bring more revenue to a State which is in debt or bankruptcy.
If people are not allowed to marry who they want based on their sex,  that is
discrimination according to the USA Constitution and the States will be sued. Just let people live their own lives. They are consumers and they are hard working people who pay their portion of Federal and State taxes. They should have the same equal rights as a heterosexual couple.

“Gay people are born and belong to every society in the world. They are all ages, all races, all faiths. They are doctors and teachers, farmers and bankers, soldiers and athletes. And whether we know it, or whether we acknowledge it, they are our family, our friends, and our neighbors. Being gay is not a western invention. It is a human reality.” said Hillary Clinton.
Once again gay people are tax payers, artists and even political leaders.
Rights should be equal for all. We are in the 21st century where things are changing every day.
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution gives lots of rights to each citizen.
Let them get married and live happily ever after…it is their life and their own business.

Over 20,000 Federal Job Openings Now Available Through US.jobs

INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, June 19, 2012 — In recent strides forward the National Labor Exchange (NLX), a partnership between DirectEmployers Association and the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA), has been granted access by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to over 20,000 federal job opportunities found on the federal website, USAJobs.gov. Federal job openings will now be distributed to the NLX website US.jobs, state job banks and microsites within the .JOBS network helping job seekers have quicker access to available federal government jobs.

Created in 2007, the NLX is a unique partnership leveraging private, nonprofit technology and existing state workforce agency resources. The NLX collects and distributes job openings exclusively found on corporate career websites, state job banks, and now federal jobs. Recently, the National Labor Exchange hit a new milestone of one million job opportunities on a daily basis from over 110,000 employers of all sizes. Each of the job openings are unduplicated, currently available and from verified employers around the nation.

“Both NASWA and DirectEmployers are dedicated to the success of the NLX and are currently looking for more ways to improve its reach. By gaining a feed of federal jobs from USAjobs.gov we are able to further strengthen the NLX by providing a broad array of employment opportunities to job seekers,” said Bill Warren, Executive Director, DirectEmployers Association.

“Military veterans will benefit greatly from the addition of federal job openings to the National Labor Exchange not only because they will have access to more jobs, but also because they benefit from Veterans’ Preference in federal jobs,” added Rich Hobbie, Executive Director of NASWA.

As DirectEmployers and NASWA continue to expand the National Labor Exchange, one goal still remains the same – to collect each real job opportunity from employers and distribute quickly to job seekers.
