Five and More Holiday Scams to Avoid and Non Legit Charities

With the holiday season upon us it isn’t just retailers looking to turn a profit. Scammers exploit the spirit of the holidays to help separate victims from their money. Many of these scams are used throughout the year but are given a new twist for the holidays.

  1. Bait-and-Switch – Scammers frequently use cheap tablets, smart phones, MP3 players, jewelry and gift cards as part of bait-and-switch scams. They may approach potential victims in a mall, on the street or through the Internet offering a deal that is too good to be true. They may even allow the victim to check out the item, but rest assured, after the money is exchanged the victim will not get the item they are expecting. Only purchase big-ticket items from respected retailers and avoid this common holiday scam.
  1. Hard Luck Stories – Scammers often take advantage of the holiday spirit of giving. They may send victims an email requesting assistance or approach victims in public. Scammers will often have an elaborate hard luck story and sometimes even use children to elicit sympathy from victims. Some scammers may also pose as stranded holiday travelers in need of assistance to get home for the holidays. Be wary of these scams and never give out your address, bank information or large amounts of cash to strangers.
  1. Charity Scams – Fake charity scams also take advantage of the spirit of giving. Beware of scam charity emails. Research a charity before making a donation and make sure they are legitimate. You should never make large donations in cash and always ask for a receipt when making a large donation.
  1. Gift Card Swap – The rise in popularity of gift cards has led to a new type of scam. Scammers will use high tech scanners to read the numbers off of the gift cards sold in the aisles of major retailers. They will then return the cards to the store shelf and monitor them to see when they are activated. Once activated, they will use the card numbers to spend the funds before the intended recipient has a chance to use the card. Whenever possible purchase your card from behind the counter of a retailer.
  1. Email Greetings – Holiday emails can sometimes be a Trojan horse for hackers. Do not open attachments from senders you do not know and be wary of strangely worded emails. Make sure your computer’s antivirus software is up to date and use it to scan anything suspicious

BBB’s Top 5 Holiday Scams To Avoid
Scammers Capitalize On Distraction Of Busy Shoppers

Holidays can be hectic, and scammers are counting on harried consumers letting down their guard, whether shopping on line, juggling packages at the mall or simply reading their e-mail.

The BBB has identified five common scams that consumers should watch out for and avoid as they shop, whether online or in stores.

“While the rest of us are pulling the decorations out of the attic, scammers are blowing the dust off of their tried and true holiday scams,” said Michelle L. Corey, BBB president and CEO. “We can all help make these holiday scams a ghost of Christmas’ past by not falling for them anymore.”

Online shopping scams: We’re all looking for a great deal online, but some sites offer electronics or luxury goods at prices that are too good to be true. Every holiday season, the BBB hears from holiday shoppers who paid for a “great deal” online, but received nothing in return.

BBB advice: Always look for the BBB logo when shopping online and click on it to confirm that it is legitimate. If you’re shopping on sites that aren’t household names, check them out with the BBB before you buy at bbb.org or by calling 314-645-3300. Confirm that the company has a legitimate address.

Nabbing the season’s hottest toys and gadgets online: When stores sell out, you may find the items online at sites like Craigslist or eBay— but for a much steeper price. The problem is that some sellers will take your money and run.

BBB Advice: Shop locally on Craigslist and conduct transactions in person. Bring along a friend if you’re uncomfortable meeting the seller alone. Never wire money as payment. If you’re shopping on auctions like eBay, research sellers extensively and listen to your doubts if the deal sounds fishy or too good to be true.

Identity theft at the mall: While you’re struggling at the mall with bags of presents, identity thieves may see an opportunity to steal your wallet or your debit or credit card numbers,

BBB Advice: Don’t let yourself get bogged down in purchases or lose track of your wallet. Know where your credit and debit cards are at all times and cover the keypad when entering your pin number while purchasing items or getting money from the ATM. Make sure you put your card back in your wallet after each purchase.

Bogus charitable pleas: The holidays are a time of giving, and that creates an opportunity for scammers to solicit donations to line their own pockets. Beware of solicitations from charities that don’t necessarily deliver on their promises or are ill-equipped to carry through on their plans. Resist demands for on-the-spot donations.

BBB Advice: Always research charities with the BBB before you give to see if the charity meets the BBB’s 20 Standards for Charity Accountability. Up-to-date reports on local and national charities are available at www.bbb.org/charity.

Phishing e-mails: Phishing e-mails are a common way for hackers to get at your personal information or break into your computer. Around the holidays, beware of e-cards and messages pretending to be from companies like UPS or Fedex with links to package tracking information.

BBB Advice: Don’t click on any links or open any attachments to e-mails until you have confirmed that they are not malicious. E-mail addresses that don’t match up, typos and grammatical mistakes are common red flags of a malicious phishing e-mail. Also beware of unsolicited e-mails from companies with which you have no association. Make sure you have current antivirus software and that all security patches have been installed on the computer.

UPDATED: 12-14-2012MULTICULTURAL MOTION PICTURE ASSOCIATION DIVERSITY AWARDS - Suspended
Here are some charity organizations that you must not support unless they prove that they are legit and they also need to publish or provide to the public where the money/funds or collections are going and how much money the director/founder are getting for doing this service.
Most of those charity founders they created them because they want to give back to the society not to pocket back their bank accounts. See list of non register charities and we will update our information here if they provide us with valid information:
1. The Kierrah Foundation - Suspended
2. The Multicultural Motion Picture Association - Suspended
3. Hope 4 Children Foundation – No record
4. The Pain Foundation – No record
Caution with the following register charities:
1. The Life Group LA
2. NOH8 Campaign
3. Exotifit For Humanity
4. We Care For The World
5.  American Society of Young Musicians
Remember that who ever founded the charity organizations is not their company. Most of non profit asking people for money or goods are public entities and they are own by the public, so those people running them are not the owners and they should never think they own them!

Additional information about Charities:

IMPORTANT EDUCATION AND KEY INFORMATION:

The California Attorney General has primary responsibility for regulating, enforcing and supervising organizations and individuals that administer and/or solicit charitable funds or assets in California. The Attorney General has the duty to protect donors to charity, charities themselves and the beneficiaries of charities. In addition, the Attorney General has broad authority under State statutes to regulate charitable organizations and trusts and to commence law enforcement investigations and legal actions to protect the public interest.

OWNERSHIP:
A nonprofit organization, in a sense, is “owned” by the public. No private person can claim ownership or control of the organization. The assets of a nonprofit organization are irrevocably dedicated to charitable, educational, literary, scientific, or religious purposes. That means the nonprofit’s cash, equipment, and other property cannot be given to anyone or used for anyone’s private benefit without fair market compensation to the organization. Moreover, a nonprofit’s property is permanently to be used for exempt purposes. When and if the organization decides to dissolve, any assets remaining after the debts and liabilities are paid must go to another nonprofit organization—not to members of the former organization or other private individuals.

Some Basic Steps For Incorporation Of A Public Benefit Corporation:
Choose a corporate name, Draft and file articles of incorporation with the Secretary of State, File federal application for employer identification number (EIN) with the IRS, File a statement by domestic nonprofit corporation, Register with the Attorney General’s Registry of Charitable Trust & File application for exemption from federal income taxes with the IRS and state income taxes with the California Franchise Tax Board.

What Is 501(c)(3) Status?
A section 501(c)(3) organization must be “organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, testing for public safety, literary or educational purposes.” To qualify, an organization must satisfy an organizational test and an operational test. The organizational test is met if the articles of incorporation include language limiting the purposes of the organization to one or more of the exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3) and do not empower the organization to engage in any substantial activities which do not further one or more exempt purposes. In addition, the organizational documents (or applicable state law) must require the organization to expressly dedicate its assets to exempt purposes in the event of a dissolution.

Fundraising campaign in California?
Prior to soliciting any charitable donations, a commercial fundraiser must register with the Registry of Charitable Trusts on a form provided by the Attorney General, pay a fee of $350, and obtain a $25,000 bond. The commercial fundraiser must renew that registration and bond annually and pay a fee of $350. A commercial fundraiser must also file an annual financial report with the Attorney General accounting for funds collected during the preceding year.Registration or licensing may also be required in various California cities and counties. There are more than 200 cities and counties that require charity fundraisers to comply with local licensing and disclosure requirements.

Solicitations Law: BUSINESS LICENSE COMMISSION
(Los Angeles County Code, Volume 3, Title 7, Chapter 7-24 requires that this Notice of Intention to be filed at least 30 days prior to beginning your solicitation or advertisement for your fund-raising activity. No advertisement or solicitation may begin until this office has issued an Information Card.

Solicitations Information Card:
An Information Card is issued by the Los Angeles Police Commission Charitable Services Section, Commission Investigation Division upon review of the Notice of Intention[PDF] to solicit charitable contributions by a requesting charitable organization. The Information Card provides important information to the donor so they may make an educated decision whether to support that organization.

Nearly 50 Vehicle Debuts Confirmed for the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 28 – December 9th

24 world and 25 North American premieres, plus first-ever.                               Advanced Technology Showcase during Press Days

LOS ANGELES, CA - November 12, 2012 – The Los Angeles Auto Show confirmed today that nearly 50 vehicles will debut at the show Nov. 28-29 when it opens for Press Days and Nov. 30-Dec. 9 for the public. Just two weeks away, the show will feature world debuts ranging from electric vehicles to performance and luxury designs from a global array of the world’s top automakers. The number of debuts and strong representation from the world’s key auto manufacturing regions underscore both the rebounding strength of the industry as well as the importance of the Show as a launch venue.

The debut lineup this year promises a compelling mix of the hottest trends and cutting-edge innovations driving today’s resurgent automotive industry. Debuts include world-firsts from Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, as well as European automakers such as BMW, Fiat, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen. Show-goers also will see global unveilings of new designs from Asian brands, including models from Acura, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota.

The debuts also include the latest in-car technologies as well as highlight fuel-efficient, hybrid, electric and alternative fuel vehicles, demonstrating that green continues to be a dominant shade of innovation in the industry. Overall, there will be two dozen all-electric or plug-in electric models at the Show, at least a dozen clean-diesel vehicles and nearly 20 vehicles achieving 40-plus mpg with highly advanced four-cylinder gasoline engines. Coverage of these technology-laden vehicles promises to be extensive thanks to a total of 25 planned press conferences and media registered from over 50 countries.

“The auto industry in North America is experiencing its best annual sales rate since 2008, and this positive growth can clearly be seen in the number of debuts, broad range of vehicles and transformative technologies on display at the show,” said Andy Fuzesi, general manager of the LA Auto Show.

Underscoring the L.A. region’s status as the largest luxury and performance market in the country, of the 50 debuts slated, at least a dozen will come from these categories. Planned bows in this segment include the world debut of the 2013 Acura RLX luxury sedan, the North American debut of the BMW i8 Spyder hybrid roadster concept as well as an undisclosed world debut from the Bavarian marque. The Show will also play host to the highly anticipated North American debut of the Jaguar F-TYPE convertible sportscar as well as a yet-to-be-disclosed world debut from Jaguar. Mercedes-Benz will have a total of four debuts including the world debut of the SLS AMG Black Series and one yet-to-be-named world debut. Ultra-luxury nameplate Bentley will be showing a North American debut and rounding out the category, a hotly-rumored world debut is slated from Porsche as well as the North American debut of the 911 Carrera 4.

The upcoming year looks to be a banner year for vehicle efficiency. According to AutoTrader.com, total shopper interest for alternative fuel and highly fuel-efficient models is up 54 percent so far in 2012. This year’s LA Auto Show reflects this trend and will host significant debuts across all green categories. This year’s Show will feature the debut of Fiat’s first electric vehicle, the 500e as well as the first all-electric vehicle for General Motors with the Chevrolet Spark EV, also making its world debut. Ford is moving strongly into the category as well with multiple new releases including the 2013 Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid, the Fusion Energi plug-in, the Focus Electric and an undisclosed world debut. Honda will also debut its new Accord plug-in hybrid.

Other show debuts represent virtually every popular segment on the road today, and include compact performance unveilings such as the world debut of the North American version of the 5-passenger Fiat 500L. Mini USA will also compete in this segment with the North American debut of the Paceman and the Clubvan. Another big statement will come from Volkswagen, which will have the 2013 Beetle Convertible on hand for its world debut. Asian automakers have also chosen LA as the ideal venue for multiple unveilings. Hyundai will debut a longer, seven passenger version of its Santa Fe crossover along with an as yet undisclosed world debut, while Honda also has a mystery world debut planned. More unrevealed world debuts are planned by Nissan, Toyota and Subaru. The Mazda6 mid-sized sports sedan will have its North American debut at the Show while Kia will present the Forte sedan for its world debut. The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander will also be making its North American debut with enhanced fuel-efficiency and advanced safety technologies including a lane departure warning system.

In addition to the notable debuts this year, there will be a Press-Days only showcase highlighting the transformative technologies increasingly embedded in these vehicles. Dubbed the Advanced Technology Showcase and presented by the Auto Alliance, an industry trade group, the focus is on the expanding list of applications and solutions now being designed into vehicles that make drivers safer while more connected. An Auto Alliance poll shows that about 6 out of 10 consumers are interested in getting driver assist technology when they purchase their next vehicle. These systems are increasingly as important to car buyers as conventional metrics such as horsepower and miles per gallon.

About the Los Angeles Auto Show:
As the first major North American auto show of the season, the 2012 LA Auto Show will host some of the industry’s most important new vehicle debuts and set the tone for the rest of the year. The dates are Nov. 28 and 29 for press and Nov. 30 – Dec. 9 for the public. The last day to register for press credentials online for pick up at the Show is Nov. 16. Spirit Day apps for iPhone and Android mobilize users against bullying, sponsored by Toyota Financial Services. Perez Hilton, Avan Jogia, Shay Mitchell, Shaquille O’Neal, George Takei, Wendy Williams among hundreds of celebrities taking part in anti-bullying effort.
NEW YORK, NY, October 2, 2012 - The National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Women’s Basketball Association (WNBA), Major League Soccer (MLS), the New York Stock Exchange, Times Square and Facebook will join hundreds of celebrities, corporations, news outlets and schools, as well as millions of Americans in wearing purple for Spirit Day on October 19 in a stand against bullying and to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth, GLAAD announced today.

Supporters are encouraged to take the Spirit Day pledge at glaad.org/spiritday

The NBA, WNBA and MLS will participate through their social media channels. The iconic New York Stock Exchange will light up in purple for Spirit Day, and the Thomson Reuters screen in Times Square will turn purple throughout the day on October 19. Facebook will go purple on select national pages and circulate information about Spirit Day to its employees globally.

GLAAD and Toyota Financial Services today also launched the “Go Purple for #SpiritDay powered by Toyota Financial Services” apps for iPhone and Android. The apps provide users with anti-bullying resources, calls to action, and a tool that can turn photos purple and share to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The free apps are now available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play. To download, visit: glaad.org/spiritday/app

“Everyone at Toyota Financial Services, and across the Toyota family, is proud and excited to be a part of this year’s Spirit Day,” said Ann Bybee, Vice President, Corporate Strategy, Communications & Community Relations. “Going purple for the day is a small but powerful way we can all show our support for those who have been bullied or who fear being bullied. It is so important to raise awareness that bullying isn’t acceptable. At Toyota, we have always embraced a guiding principle of ‘respect for people,’ which has made us the company we are today. And it is a principle that includes not only our employees and customers, but everyone, without exception.”

GLAAD also launched the ‘19 Days of Action,’ a countdown to Spirit Day that provides supporters with one simple action they can take daily to combat bullying. More information and a list of actions is available atglaad.org/spiritday or on the “Go Purple for #SpiritDay powered by Toyota Financial Services” apps for iPhone and Adroid.

Previously announced participants include TV icon George Takei, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, star of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars Shay Mitchell, daytime talk show host of The Wendy Williams Show, Wendy Williams, and Nickelodeon’s Avan Jogia, who will join LGBT advocates Jordan Addison, Shane Bitney Crone, Brittany McMillan, Tiq Milan, Janet Mock, Jennifer Tyrrell, and Zach Wahls as Spirit Day Ambassadors.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the nation’s second largest school district with more than 640,000 students in over 900 schools, will participate by sharing information about Spirit Day with students on its website and through its social media channels. The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) will also participate through social media.

Participating companies will distribute information to employees about wearing purple and/or turn their logo purple on October 19.

In 2010, teenager Brittany McMillan called on her friends to wear purple as a way to memorialize those who lost their lives to bullying. With GLAAD’s help, Spirit Day has since garnered widespread support from celebrities, TV news and entertainment programs, corporations, organizations, schools, local communities, and even national landmarks. Spirit Day coincides with GLSEN’s Ally Week, as well as National Bullying Prevention Month.

“Showing support for your friends, family and teachers can make all the difference in the world to young LGBT people, whether they are going through a tough time or not,” said 17-year-old McMillan. “This year, Spirit Day is going to be bigger and better than ever, and I’m so thrilled to be going purple alongside some of my favorite celebrities, as well as millions of others in a united stand against bullying.”

“By going purple for Spirit Day, millions of Americans are helping to send a clear message that no one should be bullied simply because of who they are,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick.

With Regis & Kelly, The View, CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News, and ABC World News; celebrities including Tyra Banks, Cher, Ellen DeGeneres, Ricky Martin, Julianne Moore, and Oprah Winfrey; corporations like AT&T, Goldman Sachs, Facebook, MTV, and NBCUniversal; and national landmarks including Times Square, LAX, and the White House.

Design studios from around the world to compete in the ninth annual
Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge: Highway Patrol Vehicle – 2025

LOS ANGELES, CA - September 5, 2012 - The pace of change in society accelerates every year, with breakthrough technologies and rapidly developing countries constantly rewriting the rules in a global economy. How this translates into life on the road for the general public is open to interpretation, but for law enforcement, it is a mission-critical assignment. To better patrol our roads and effectively “protect and serve,” the future highway patrol vehicle will have to be designed with an entirely new set of considerations, including advanced powertrains, alternative fuels, telemetrics and new sizes to effectively navigate dynamic urban environments.

This year’s Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge asks a highly competitive field of major auto manufacturer design studios, from the U.S., Germany and Japan, to solve this puzzle and create the ultimate law enforcement patrol vehicle for the year 2025. So far, design studios from Bentley, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai and Subaru have accepted the challenge to use their innovation and insight to explore creative solutions as they contend for this annual design honor.

“One of the most difficult yet important tasks in design is looking into the future to envision and create the trends and tools that haven’t been imagined,” said Chuck Pelly, director of Design Los Angeles and partner in The Design Academy, Inc. “Adding the element of law enforcement to this year’s competition creates another layer of importance that makes a challenge equal to the level of our participants.”

The winning design will be announced Nov. 29 during an event at the LA Auto Show Press Days. Judging criteria will be based upon various factors including: consideration of future needs for advanced technology, speed and agility on future freeway systems; creativity of the solution; meeting a specific region’s emission standards; and environmental sensitivity, including maintenance and recyclability. All entries will be unveiled online at LAautoshow.com in early November.

Entries will be judged by Tom Matano, executive director, School of Industrial Design at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University; Imre Molnar, provost and chief academic officer at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies; and Stewart Reed, chair of Transportation Design at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design. This year’s guest judge, Bruce Meyer, is a board member of the California Highway Patrol 11-99 Foundation, which provides emergency benefits to CHP employees and the members of their families in times of crisis. Mr. Meyer is perhaps better known as a high-profile collector, former racer and past chairman of the Petersen Automotive Museum.

The Design Challenge is sponsored by Faurecia, the world’s sixth-largest automotive supplier specializing in automotive seating, emissions control technologies, interior systems and auto exteriors, as well as Yokohama Tire, which works closely with auto manufacturers in the U.S., Europe and Japan to develop tires for the latest concept vehicles. Other sponsors that make Design Los Angeles possible include, Dassault Systemes, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry (INDA) and Lacks Enterprises.

About the Design Challenge:
The Design Challenge takes place annually during the LA Auto Show Press Days, Nov. 28-29, 2012. For each of the past nine years, a new Design Challenge theme is chosen and the major automotive design studios showcase their talents, competing against one another to further explore new ideas in automotive design. The LA Auto Show Press Days hosts the largest gathering of design professionals in North America for a variety of design-focused activities including a Designers’ Night party that brings together design industry leaders from around the world.

On Monday, August 20, 2012 FOX announced that Kevin Reilly has been promoted to Chairman of Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX), it was announced by Peter Rice, Chairman and CEO, Fox Networks Group. In his new role, Reilly will oversee all programming, scheduling, marketing, research, digital and business affairs at the network.

“Kevin is a uniquely gifted executive with the strong strategic vision and creative instincts to ensure that FOX continues to drive the future of our industry,” said Rice. “We are incredibly fortunate to have him here and thrilled he will be with us for many more years.”

Over the course of Reilly’s tenure, FOX has extended its reign as the No. 1 network among Adults 18-49 for a record eight consecutive seasons and has repeatedly dominated among the young Adults 18-34 and Teen demographics. Under his leadership, the network launched Emmy Award-nominated and Golden Globe Award-winning pop culture phenomenon GLEE, and most recently introduced NEW GIRL, the network’s highest-rated sitcom in 10 years, as well as THE X FACTOR, last season’s No. 1 new unscripted series.

Reilly has also bolstered FOX’s leadership and investment in digital and social media, and was the architect behind the recently launched Animation Domination HD – an independent production subsidiary now ramping up production to generate alternative animation for digital channels and a late-night block on FOX.

“I am grateful to Peter for extending my role at FOX where I’m inspired every day by the incredible leadership of Joe Earley, Mike Darnell and our entire team at the network – as well as the leadership above us at News Corporation,” said Reilly. “This is a transformative time in our industry – one that presents huge opportunities – and we intend for FOX, and all of our programming, to remain the gold standard for innovation.”

Throughout his career, Reilly has distinguished himself as one of television’s most influential and forward-thinking leaders. Prior to joining FOX in 2007, Reilly served as President of Entertainment at NBC, where he introduced popular hits such as “The Office,” “The Biggest Loser,” “Heroes,” “Friday Night Lights” and the multi-award-winning Tina Fey sitcom, “30 Rock.” Reilly joined NBC from FX, where he served as President of Entertainment and was instrumental in successfully transforming it from a fledgling cable network into a profitable creative powerhouse. At FX, Reilly re-defined the basic cable business by branding the network with an aggressive slate of original quality programs, including seminal series “The Shield” and “Nip/Tuck.”  Within a year of Reilly’s arrival, FX made cable history when “The Shield” broke cable ratings records and went on to receive a Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Series (2002) and an Emmy Award for lead actor Michael Chiklis (2002) – both firsts for basic cable.

Prior to joining FX, Mr. Reilly was President of Brillstein-Grey Entertainment. He joined Brillstein-Grey in 1994 and was responsible for shepherding the pilot for the landmark series “The Sopranos” – one of the most successful and critically acclaimed shows in television history – and the NBC hit comedies “Just Shoot Me” and “NewsRadio.”

Early in his career, Reilly held a variety of positions at NBC Entertainment, where he had a hand in the development of distinctive and groundbreaking hits, including the pilots for “ER,” “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Law & Order.”

The Philippines Needs You; Call For Support Operation Walang Iwanan NCR Monsoon Flooding

San Diego, CA, August 7, 2012 – Gawad Kalinga USA sends out a call for support for the thousands of families affected by floods in many parts of Metro Manila which is continuously being hit by torrential rains for more than a week now. Although not directly hit by Typhoon Gener (international name: “Saola”), monsoon rains had worsened the past week causing floods in many areas.

In the last 24 hours, rains continued to pour causing dams to overflow and forced thousands of families to flee their homes. In some parts of Metro Manila, floodwaters have reached the second floor of buildings. As of today, the death toll had reached 51.

According to PAGASA, 222.6 meters of rains has been poured in the last 9 hours, which is now close to the record set by Typhoon Ondoy (international name: “Ketsana”) in 2009 which killed at least 747 people and created about $1 billion in damages.

send funds quickly and easily

On August 7, 2012 BusinessWeek.com reported that: “Three people drowned in Bulacan, north of Manila, Superintendent Noli Pacheco said yesterday. In Batangas, south of the capital, two children drowned while trying to cross a swollen river, provincial police spokeswoman Aleli Buaquen said. A landslide in Quezon City killed nine people, the government’s disaster risk reduction agency said, and a body was found along the Bued river in Pangasinan, north of Manila, according to a report from the regional police office.

Rain intensified as night fell, with the weather bureau recording 30 millimeters to 40 millimeters per hour in some parts of metro Manila.

Floodwaters submerged Barangay Tumana in Marikina and some of the town’s 25,000 residents were stranded on rooftops, Marikina Congressman Miro Quimbo said by phone. Landslides may threaten districts north of Manila, including Antipolo City in Rizal, Environment Secretary Ramon Paje told ABS-CBN.

The rain will subside in the capital and nearby provinces today as Typhoon Haikui nears China, state weather forecaster Bernie de Leon said on dzMM radio.

Manila and Pampanga province were also rattled by an earthquake as a magnitude-5.3 temblor struck Occidental Mindoro province at 1:03 p.m., the local volcanology institute said. In metro Manila, almost 130,000 people fled their homes, said Susana Cruz, a member of the civil defense office.”

Reallocation of Event Donation for GK homes to Disaster Relief Appeal

Dear fellow honorees and friends:

In light of another calamity that recently hit the Philippines, GK USA activated an appeal to the Filipino American communities in the United Sates to support the disaster relief efforts currently being organized by Gawad Kalinga for Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon.

Although Typhoon Gener (international name: Saola) did not hit the Philippines directly, it brought monsoon rains that had worsened in the past week causing floods in many areas.  For several days, rain continued to pour causing dams to overflow and forced thousands of families to flee their homes.  According to the DSWD, 181,181 families are affected in 32 provinces in the country.  The total death toll is now at 51.
I would like to request concurrence from the 99 honorees to reallocate $10,000 of the $25,000 funds that you’ve raised for Gawad Kalinga homes through the “100 Outstanding Filipinos” event.  The remaining $15,000 will be used to build homes as promised.
For expediency, I would like to base final decision on the majority of responses received.
Kindly send your answer as a yes or no within the next 24 hours.
Salamat po and  walang iwanan!
