Steve Warren to receive Stephen F. Kolzak Award; Leonardo DiCarprio, Charlize Theron, and Jennifer Lawrence to present.

Los Angeles, April 3, 2013 - GLAAD, the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy organization, today announced it will honor former President Bill Clinton at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles. Entertainment attorney Steve Warren will also receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award during the event at the JW Marriott on April 20, 2013.

For tickets, table purchases and additional information about the GLAAD Media Awards visit http://glaad.org/mediaawards.

Bill Clinton will receive GLAAD’s first Advocate for Change Award during the event. In 2011, Clinton advocated for marriage equality in New York, stating that “for more than a century, our Statue of Liberty has welcomed all kinds of people from all over the world yearning to be free. In the 21st century, I believe New York’s welcome must include marriage equality.” In 2012, he joined the Coalition to Protect North Carolina Families in working against North Carolina’s proposed Amendment One to ban marriage and civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. Most recently, he called for the Supreme Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act in an op-ed for The Washington Post.

During his administration, Clinton became the first U.S. President to appoint out gay and lesbian people to all levels of government. He appointed more than 150 including James Hormel as America’s first openly gay ambassador. During the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, his administration convened the first White House Conference on the epidemic, created the national AIDS Policy Coordinator post, and expanded funding for research.  In 2002, his Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) began as the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in the developing world.
The Veterans Site
“President Clinton’s support of the LGBT community and recognition that DOMA, the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, is unconstitutional and should be struck down shows that the political landscape continues to change in favor of LGBT equality,” said GLAAD’s Wilson Cruz. “Leaders and allies like President Clinton are critical to moving our march for equality forward.”

GLAAD will present the Stephen F. Kolzak Award to Steve Warren. Warren, a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School, has been a practicing entertainment lawyer for twenty-seven years. He is a name partner at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush & Kaller, LLP, specializing in the representation of actors, directors and writers. He served as the first out gay man on the Board of Trustees for his daughter’s school, the Center for Early Education, and currently serves as the first out gay man on the Board of Trustees at the Archer School for Girls. Warren joined GLAAD’s Board of Directors in 2010, and currently serves on the Executive Committee.

“Steve Warren’s work and career have opened doors for out professionals across the entertainment industry,” said Wilson Cruz. “In addition to advocating for LGBT people, he has continuously mobilized a large base of high-profile allies to help bring about social change,” said Cruz.

The Stephen F. Kolzak Award is named after a successful casting director who devoted the last part of his life to raising awareness in the entertainment industry about the discrimination faced by gay and HIV-positive people.  The award is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality for our community. Previous recipients include Ellen DeGeneres, Sir Ian McKellen, Bill Condon, Wanda Sykes, Alan Ball and Robert Greenblatt.

Additional special guests for the Los Angeles event include: Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron, and Jennifer Lawrence. Additional presenters and LGBT advocates will be announced.

The 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles are presented nationally by Ketel One Vodka and Wells Fargo and locally by Delta Air Lines.

The final GLAAD Media Awards event will take place in San Francisco on May 11 at the Hilton San Francisco – Union Square where Adam Lambert will receive the Davidson/Valentini Award.

Nominees for the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards were announced in January and are available here: http://www.glaad.org/mediaawards/nominees.  The New York GLAAD Media Awards were held on March 16 at the New York Marriott Marquis.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives.   They also fund GLAAD’s work to amplify stories from the LGBT community that build support for equality.  Each year, the GLAAD Media Awards in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco bring together more than 5,000 advocates and allies to raise critical funds for the organization’s work.

The 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards are executive produced by Marc Honaker, Director of Creative Development at GLAAD, and by Josh Wood, founder and president of Josh Wood Productions. Emmy Award-winning production designer James Connelly will design this year’s set. Producer and editor Brett Henrichsen will also contribute to this year’s GLAAD Media Awards.

About Autism: Autism is a general term used to describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders – autism spectrum disorders–caused by a combination of genes and environmental influences. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by communication difficulties, social and behavioral challenges, as well as repetitive behaviors. An estimated one in 88 children in the U.S. is on the autism spectrum – a 78 percent increase in six years that is only partly explained by improved diagnosis.

Complete list of The 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York Marriott Marquis

Good Morning America’s Sam Champion, Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer hosted as GLAAD honored journalist, author and talk show host Anderson Cooper and the best in television, film and journalism last night at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York.  Madonna, Bernadette Peters, Dan Stevens, Russell Simmons, Milla Jovovich, Jake Shears, Chris Kluwe and Brendon Ayanbadejo were among the special guests.

New York, Saturday, March 16, 2013 - GLAAD Media Award recipients were announced in 16 of this year’s 33 media categories at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, presented nationally by Ketel One and Wells Fargo, and locally by Delta Air Lines, at the New York Marriott Marquis on Saturday night.  Additional award recipients will be announced in Los Angeles on April 20 at the JW Marriott, and in San Francisco on May 11 at the Hilton San Francisco – Union Square.

At the ceremony, Madonna presented the Vito Russo Award to her longtime friend, Anderson Cooper.  The Vito Russo Award is presented to openly LGBT media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality for the LGBT community.

Madonna wore a Cub Scout uniform and expressed her support for GLAAD’s year-long campaign to end the Boy Scouts’ ban on gay scouts and scout leaders, saying “I think they should change their stupid rules, don’t you?”

Anderson Cooper accepted the Vito Russo Award from Madonna, saying “I’ve had so many blessings in my life, and being gay is certainly one of the greatest blessings.  It has allowed me to love and to be loved and to help open my head and my heart in ways I could never have predicted. The ability to love one another, the ability to love another person is, in my opinion, one of God’s greatest gifts, and I thank God every day for enabling me to give and share love with the people in my life – my family, and my friends, and my partner Benjamin.  Thank you very much, and thank you for being here.”

Also at the event, hip hop mogul Russell Simmons presented the Ally Award to director Brett Ratner, in advance of GLAAD’s premiere of a public service announcement (PSA) campaign helmed by Ratner.  The GLAAD “Coming Out for Equality” PSA series features a diverse group of straight celebrities and athletes “coming out of the closet” as supporters of equality and calling for other Americans to speak out.

Accepting the award, Ratner said, “In my life I’ve spent a lot of time searching deep into my heart for what my true values and beliefs are, and I know that I have love in my heart for everyone.  But it doesn’t count for much if a word has been said by me that helps to perpetuate and validate the people out there that are truly bigoted and hateful.  After some examination I have taken some steps that I hope will stamp out thoughtless bigotry.  Together, with a number of my friends, we made some PSAs with the hope of changing people’s behavior and helping them become allies for all equality. It’s been truly rewarding and I’m grateful and humbled to receive this honor from GLAAD.”

After a speech calling for greater efforts to end discrimination against transgender people, GLAAD President Herndon Graddick was joined onstage by 12-year-old transgender girl Jazz and her family, and by 6-year-old transgender girl Coy Mathis and her family.  Graddick urged everyone to visit www.glaad.org/coymathis to sign a petition calling on Coy’s school to treat transgender students equally.

Director David France accepted the award for Outstanding Documentary for his film How to Survive a Plague.  He was joined by ACT UP co-founder Peter Staley, who appeared in the film.  Executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron were joined by cast members Bernadette Peters, Christian Borle, Andy Mientus, Wesley Taylor, and Krysta Rodriguez as they picked up the statuette on behalf of Smash, which received the award for Outstanding Drama Series.  Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge (aka The Fabulous Beekman Boys) accepted the award for The Amazing Race in the Outstanding Reality Program category.

NEW YORK, NY, March 2, 2013 - GLAAD, the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy organization, today announced that Madonna will present journalist, author and talk show host Anderson Cooper with the Vito Russo Award at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the New York ceremony on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at the New York Marriot Marquis, presented locally by Delta Air Lines. The GLAAD Media Awards are presented nationally by Ketel One and Wells Fargo.

Cooper and Madonna are longtime friends who have both used their careers to raise support for LGBT people around the globe.

For tickets, table purchases and additional information about the GLAAD Media Awards visit http://glaad.org/mediaawards.

“Madonna has been a passionate spokesperson and long time supporter of gay rights. She has embraced  LGBT people around the world on many occasions,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. “From speaking out against bullying to raising support for marriage equality, Madonna has always been one of our community’s strongest allies. We are honored to have her stand with GLAAD and Anderson Cooper.”

The Vito Russo Award is presented to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality. The Award is named for Vito Russo, a founder of GLAAD and celebrated activist with ACT UP, who chronicled the early images of LGBT people in film and in his book The Celluloid Closet.  Previous Vito Russo honorees include Ricky Martin, Rosie O’Donnell, Alan Cumming, Cynthia Nixon, Nathan Lane, Cherry Jones, Elton John, k.d. lang, Brian Graden, and Tom Ford.

“By sharing his own experiences as a gay man, Anderson has reminded millions of Americans that LGBT people are part of their everyday lives and an integral part of our cultural fabric,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. “He continues to raise the bar and set a new standard for journalists everywhere, and I’m proud to call him a friend.”

The anchors of Good Morning America, Lara Spencer, Josh Elliott and Sam Champion are hosting the evening. Special guests include NFL players Brendon Ayanbadejo and Chris Kluwe, director Brett Ratner, Ellen Barkin, MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry and Thomas Roberts, and John Leguizamo.  Additional honorees and guests for the New York event will be announced.

For more than 20 years, Anderson Cooper has been an instrumental figure in American journalism.  Enticing audiences with his compassionate and fearless coverage, Cooper has won multiple awards for his work, including several Emmy Awards, National Headliner Awards, and Peabody Awards.  In 2010, Haiti awarded Cooper the National Order of Honour and Merit, the highest honor the country offers, for his coverage of the earthquake that devastated that country.

In addition to reporting for CNN on Anderson Cooper 360°, Cooper is also a contributor to CBS’ 60 Minutes, where he has interviewed cultural icons and newsmakers.  In 2011, he became the host of his own nationally syndicated talk show, Anderson Live.  Dispatches from the Edge, Cooper’s memoirs about covering the South Asia tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and other news events, topped The New York Times Bestsellers List and other bestseller charts.

Never one to shy away from tough topics, Cooper has tackled multiple issues relevant to the LGBT community, including bullying of LGBT youth, families supporting their transgender children, the dangers of so-called “ex-gay conversion therapy,” and soldiers forced to serve under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

For his coverage of issues relevant to the LGBT community, Anderson Cooper has received eight GLAAD Media Award nominations, and has been awarded the trophy three times.

Nominees for the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards were announced in January and are available here:http://www.glaad.org/mediaawards/nominees.

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in New York on March 16, 2013 at the New York Marriott Marquis; in Los Angeles on April 20 at the JW Marriott; and in San Francisco on May 11 at the Hilton San Francisco – Union Square.  Additional Special Honorees for each city will be announced in coming weeks.

The 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards are executive produced by Marc Honaker, Director of Creative Development at GLAAD, and by Josh Wood, founder and president of Josh Wood Productions.  “I am very proud that my company is producing the GLAAD Media Awards this year alongside such great collaborators.  I have always been a fan of the organization and the important work GLAAD is doing to make the world a better place for the LGBT community.  The fight is not over in the United States, or globally, and I admire GLAAD for inspiring and changing opinions through media,” said Wood.

Emmy Award winning production designer James Connelly will design this year’s set across the three cities. Acclaimed producer and editor Brett Henrichsen will also contribute to this year’s GLAAD Media Awards.
