Supporters are encouraged to take the Spirit Day pledge at glaad.org/spiritday
The NBA, WNBA and MLS will participate through their social media channels. The iconic New York Stock Exchange will light up in purple for Spirit Day, and the Thomson Reuters screen in Times Square will turn purple throughout the day on October 19. Facebook will go purple on select national pages and circulate information about Spirit Day to its employees globally.
GLAAD and Toyota Financial Services today also launched the “Go Purple for #SpiritDay powered by Toyota Financial Services” apps for iPhone and Android. The apps provide users with anti-bullying resources, calls to action, and a tool that can turn photos purple and share to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The free apps are now available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play. To download, visit: glaad.org/spiritday/app
“Everyone at Toyota Financial Services, and across the Toyota family, is proud and excited to be a part of this year’s Spirit Day,” said Ann Bybee, Vice President, Corporate Strategy, Communications & Community Relations. “Going purple for the day is a small but powerful way we can all show our support for those who have been bullied or who fear being bullied. It is so important to raise awareness that bullying isn’t acceptable. At Toyota, we have always embraced a guiding principle of ‘respect for people,’ which has made us the company we are today. And it is a principle that includes not only our employees and customers, but everyone, without exception.”
GLAAD also launched the ‘19 Days of Action,’ a countdown to Spirit Day that provides supporters with one simple action they can take daily to combat bullying. More information and a list of actions is available atglaad.org/spiritday or on the “Go Purple for #SpiritDay powered by Toyota Financial Services” apps for iPhone and Adroid.
Previously announced participants include TV icon George Takei, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, star of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars Shay Mitchell, daytime talk show host of The Wendy Williams Show, Wendy Williams, and Nickelodeon’s Avan Jogia, who will join LGBT advocates Jordan Addison, Shane Bitney Crone, Brittany McMillan, Tiq Milan, Janet Mock, Jennifer Tyrrell, and Zach Wahls as Spirit Day Ambassadors.

In 2010, teenager Brittany McMillan called on her friends to wear purple as a way to memorialize those who lost their lives to bullying. With GLAAD’s help, Spirit Day has since garnered widespread support from celebrities, TV news and entertainment programs, corporations, organizations, schools, local communities, and even national landmarks. Spirit Day coincides with GLSEN’s Ally Week, as well as National Bullying Prevention Month.
“Showing support for your friends, family and teachers can make all the difference in the world to young LGBT people, whether they are going through a tough time or not,” said 17-year-old McMillan. “This year, Spirit Day is going to be bigger and better than ever, and I’m so thrilled to be going purple alongside some of my favorite celebrities, as well as millions of others in a united stand against bullying.”
“By going purple for Spirit Day, millions of Americans are helping to send a clear message that no one should be bullied simply because of who they are,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick.

Cool Tips for Hot Days from LADWP on How to Stay Cool and Conserve Energy as Summer Heats Up
August 7, 2012 by Press Release
Filed under Community, Consumer News, Featured, News, Summer, Weather

August 7, 2012 - LOS ANGELES, CA. With high temperatures in the forecast for the next several days in Los Angeles, LADWP offers these tips to help customers stay cool and conserve energy. Energy conservation during high temperature summer days helps prevent strain on power system infrastructure while also helping our customers save money on their power bills.
These simple tips are easy to implement in daily routines and are highly effective conservation measures:
Tips for the Home
- Adjust thermostat to 78 degrees to reduce energy usage during the hottest hours of the day when air conditioning systems have to work hardest to cool.
- Limit the use of appliances during peak hours of the day- use washing machines, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners and other heavy appliances during evening hours.
- Try to avoid using your stove or oven during peak hours of the day since it will add to the heat inside the home.
- Ventilate your home at night and early morning by opening windows and doors to clear out the heat and allow cooler air to circulate.
- Turn off lights and equipment when they are not in use.
- Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) wherever appropriate.
- Close draperies, shades or blinds during the heat of the day to reduce the extra heat from direct sunlight.
- Check your home for adequate insulation and for proper sealing of windows and exterior doors.
- Plant shade trees to reduce heat gain inside the house.
- Install / use ceiling fans or “whole house” fans for comfort cooling. A whole house fan will cool down your house early evenings and early mornings for a fraction of the energy cost of operating an A/C unit.
- Install a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature automatically and maximize your energy savings.
- Clean or replace air-conditioner filter(s) every month to maintain efficiency and air flow.
- Regularly brush or vacuum the condenser coils at the bottom or rear of your refrigerator and check door gasket for tight fit and adjust if necessary.
- When buying appliances, choose energy-saving EnergyStar-rated models.
- Limit the time you run your pool pump during summer to six hours a day, and schedule the run time to avoid operation between 1 pm and 5 pm.
- Unplug “energy vampires” like cell phone chargers, DVD players, microwave ovens and other appliances that use energy even when turned off or in sleep mode.
Tips for the Workplace
- Turn off your desk and overhead lights, and meeting room lights, if they are not needed, or install motion detector switches in each room.
- Keep personal appliance use to a minimum.
- Turn off all computer equipment when you leave the office or when they are not in use for long periods of time.
- Be sure your computer equipment goes into sleep mode when temporarily not in use.
- Go paperless when possible. Reduced printing and copying translates into reduced energy use.
LADWP Energy Conservation Rebate Programs
- Energy Star-Rated Room Air Conditioners. $50 rebate on qualifying models.
- Central Air Conditioners. $100-$120 rebate on an energy efficient model.
- Refrigerator Exchange for Low Income Customers. Qualifying low-income or Lifeline customers can receive a free energy efficient refrigerator in exchange for an old inefficient model.

CareerBuilder’s Mid-Year Job Forecast Points to a Better Hiring Picture in the Back Half of 2012
July 5, 2012 by Press Release
Filed under Breaking News, Business News, Community, Consumer News, Money, News, US News
Chicago, July 5, 2012 – While the jobs recovery continues to lag that of previous recessions, the outlook for the back half of 2012 shows continued improvement over 2011. Forty-four percent of private sector employers reported they are planning to hire full-time, permanent staff from July 1 through December 31, 2012, an increase of nine percentage points over the same period last year. In last year’s forecast, the number of companies planning to hire full-time, permanent employees (35 percent) increased seven percentage points over 2010. The nationwide survey, which was conducted by Harris Interactive© from May 14, 2012 to June 4, 2012, included more than 2,000 hiring managers and human resource professionals across industries and company sizes.
Download Full-Report: http://bit.ly/OjOPwN
“The rate of job creation has been slower than what we would have expected at this point in the recovery, but the market is stable,” said Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder. “Two years ago, the hiring activity in the U.S. was driven primarily by large employers recruiting in metropolitan areas for a handful of industries or job functions. Today, we see job listings in all industries, market sizes and company sizes. The outlook for the remainder of the year is better than 2011, but it will follow the same pattern of steady progress rather than a surge in job growth. Employers will remain careful as they assess barriers and opportunities for growth in the economy and their own businesses.”
Employers plan to add a mix of new employees over the next six months, with each category trending up from last year:
· Hiring full-time, permanent employees – 44 percent, up from 35 percent in 2011
· Hiring part-time employees – 21 percent, up from 15 percent in 2011
· Hiring contract or temporary employees – 21 percent, up from 12 percent in 2011
Small Business Hiring
Hiring among small businesses is gradually gaining ground. However, companies with 50 or fewer employees continue to be more cautious than other segments and reported little change in recruitment plans from last year.
· 50 or fewer employees – 21 percent hiring full-time, permanent employees, up from 20 percent in 2011
· 250 or fewer employees – 31 percent hiring full-time, permanent employees, up from 26 percent in 2011
· 500 or fewer employees – 34 percent hiring full-time, permanent employees, up from 27 percent in 2011
Hiring in Metropolitan and Rural Areas
Job creation is picking up in both big cities and outlying towns. Of employers who are hiring, 75 percent said they will be recruiting for positions in large metropolitan areas while 39 percent will be hiring in non-metropolitan, rural areas.
Hiring By Region
Comparing regions, the West is the most optimistic in terms of hiring plans for July through December and reported the highest year-over-year increase for adding full-time, permanent staff.
· West – 47 percent hiring full-time, permanent employees, up from 35 percent in 2011
· South – 45 percent hiring full-time, permanent employees, up from 38 percent in 2011
· Northeast – 44 percent hiring full-time, permanent employees, up from 34 percent in 2011
· Midwest – 40 percent hiring full-time, permanent employees, up from 32 percent in 2011
Where Employers Are Hiring First
The top functional areas for which businesses plan to hire first are those directly impacting revenue and innovation. Customer Service remains in the No. 1 spot for recruitment with Information Technology and Sales rounding out the top three.
· Customer Service – 24 percent
· Information Technology – 22 percent
· Sales – 21 percent
· Administrative – 16 percent
· Business Development – 13 percent
· Accounting/Finance – 12 percent
· Marketing – 11 percent.
Emerging Occupations
More employers are also reporting that their organizations have created entirely new job functions within their organizations to respond to evolving business demands. When asked if their organizations currently have positions that didn’t exist in their firms five years ago, employers pointed to the following:
· Positions tied to social media – 16 percent
· Positions tied to storing and managing data – 15 percent
· Positions tied to cyber security – 12 percent
· Positions tied to financial regulation – 10 percent
· Positions tied to promoting diversity inside and outside the organization – 9 percent
· Positions tied to green energy and the environment – 8 percent
· Positions tied to global relations – 8 percent
Hiring in Q2 2012
One-third (34 percent) of employers added full-time, permanent headcount in the second quarter, up from 29 percent last year and 33 percent last quarter. Nine percent decreased headcount while 56 percent made no change to staff levels and 1 percent were unsure.
Hiring in Q3 2012
Looking ahead, 30 percent of employers plan to hire full-time, permanent employees in the third quarter, up from 26 percent last year. Given that employers historically have been more conservative in estimates than actual hiring activity, the number may come in higher at quarter end.
Seven percent expect to downsize staffs, down from 8 percent last year. Fifty-eight percent anticipate no changes to headcount while 5 percent are undecided.
Changing Jobs
Workers are feeling better about their job prospects with one-in-four (27 percent) stating they are likely to leave their current jobs in the next 12 months, up slightly from 26 percent last year.
As the job market improves and employee turnover rates increase, the competition for in-demand talent is getting more intense. Thirty-nine percent of employers are concerned that top talent will leave their organizations, up from 35 percent last year. Twenty-one percent reported they lost top performers in the second quarter, up from 18 percent last year and 19 percent last quarter.
*Totals may not equal 100 percent due to rounding.
Survey Methodology
This survey was conducted online within the U.S. by Harris Interactive© on behalf of CareerBuilder among 2,298 U.S. hiring managers and human resource professionals and 3,892 U.S. workers (employed full-time, not self-employed, non-government) ages 18 and over between May 14 and June 4, 2012 (percentages for some questions are based on a subset, based on their responses to certain questions). With pure probability samples of 2,298 and 3,892, one could say with a 95 percent probability that the overall results have a sampling error of +/-2.04 and +/-1.57 percentage points, respectively. Sampling error for data from sub-samples is higher and varies.

Fundraiser For The Ferret Squad Film Donates Over $1,100 To Legalize Ferrets
July 4, 2012 by Press Release
Filed under Breaking News, Entertainment News, Featured, FEATURES, Fundraising, International News, Movies, US News

Percentage of Online Donations Goes to Organization Intent on Making Pet Ferrets Legal in CA.
On Wednesday, July 4, 2012, The Ferret Squad Media announced that over the past several months, Canadian Director, Alison Parker, has been using the online donation site www.Indiegogo.com to raise funds to make her next feature film, The Ferret Squad. The word about the movie spread over social media such as Facebook and Twitter, and by the end of the fundraising campaign in early June, 284 funders from all corners of the globe had donated over $25,000.00 toward the film. Parker had decided that since the movie’s central focus is the fact that pet ferrets are illegal in California, 5% of the net donations would be given to the group www.LegalizeFerrets.org — a group dedicated to making the domestic ferret legal.
Parker is pleased to announce that with the help of funders, the total donation to LegalizeFerrets.org totalled $1,110.94 USD.
“Thanks to the many supporters and contributors of The Ferret Squad, we were able to make a sizable donation to assist in the fight to Legalize Ferrets in California. Here’s hoping that the publicity from the film will also make a difference. This is a law that needs to be overturned as soon as possible. Ferrets are domesticated animals. They’re pets. They’re family,” declared Parker.
With the help of the fundraising efforts, Parker hopes to commence filming in August, 2012, in the Vancouver, British Columbia area.
The Ferret Squad tells the story of Max Jones, played by Jake and Jasper: A Ferret Tale star Connor Stanhope (Connor also played the role of young “Lex Luthor” on the TV series Smallville). In the story, Max is a teenage boy who must move to California with his father, Ben (Chad Willett); he then realizes that Digger, his pet ferret, won’t be able to come along because ferrets are illegal. Max finds a way to sneak Digger across the border, and thinks his troubles are over. In his new home state, Max meets and joins forces with a group of quirky kids known as “The Ferret Squad” who spend their summer days rescuing and fostering illegal ferrets. When Animal Control plans to destroy some confiscated ferrets, Max and the Ferret Squad go on a desperate mission to save the poor animals by transporting them across the border with the law and their parents in hot pursuit. The movie also stars Sierra Pitkin (Juno) and Jake and Jasper: A Ferret Tale alumnus Blu Mankuma (“Harry Helmsley”, 2012), Canadian Actor Chad Willett (The Locket, Joan of Arc), Award Winning Canadian Actress Gabrielle Rose (Excited), Michael Roberds (“Uncle Fester” on the TV Series The New Addams Family) and Falcor the Ferret (Jake and Jasper: A Ferret Tale)

Rules Approved for 85th Academy Awards 2013
June 28, 2012 by Press Release
Filed under Awards, Breaking News, Film, International News, News, US News, World News
Beverly Hills, CA (June 28, 2012) – The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved rules for the 85th Academy Awards. The most significant changes affect the Music, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Visual Effects categories.
In the Music (Original Song) category, the Executive Committee may recommend that a fourth songwriter for an individual song be considered in rare and extraordinary circumstances. This amends the rule that has been in effect since 2005, whereby up to two songwriters could be eligible per song, although a third songwriter could be added if he or she were found to be an essentially equal contributor.
In the Foreign Language Film category, films must be submitted to the Academy in 35mm or DCP, but are no longer required to be exhibited in those formats in their countries of origin.
The award given in the Makeup category will now be known as the Makeup and Hairstyling Award. Additionally, during the nominations process, all branch members who have seen the seven shortlisted titles will receive ballots to list their top three choices.
In the Visual Effects category, nominees will be selected from a pool of ten films chosen by the Branch Executive Committee by secret ballot. Previously, the committee could put forward as many as ten productions or as few as seven.
Other adjustments to the rules include standard date changes and other “housekeeping” adjustments.
Rules are reviewed annually by individual branch and category committees. The Awards Rules Committee then reviews all proposed changes before presenting its recommendations to the Academy’s Board of Governors for approval.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar® presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

On Friday, May 18, 2012 The Ferret Squad Media announced that Ferret Depot (www.ferretdepot.com), the top online supplier for quality ferret products, which prides itself on their exceptional customer service and product selection, is the first corporation to make a generous donation to the independent feature film, The Ferret Squad.
The Ferret Squad is a coming of age film about a young group of friends called The Ferret Squad, who spend their summer days rescuing and fostering abandoned ferrets in California.
With the help of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and media partner Diversity News Publications, Director Alison Parker has created a world-wide buzz in support of the film. Already on tap to star in the movie are actorsConnor Stanhope (known for his role as “Young Lex Luthor” in the TV series Smallville), Blu Mankuma (“Harry Helmsley”, 2012) and Sierra Pitkin (“Liberty Bell”, Juno). Screenwriter Sally Meyer (You’re So Cupid) wrote the script for The Ferret Squad and filming is slated to begin this summer in Vancouver, BC.

“Ferret Depot has been incredibly supportive in the ferret community, often donating to ferret rescues and events. They even offer up to 20% off their internet prices to ferret rescues and shelters. I’m grateful and honored that they believe in this project enough to step up and make a donation. After all, this is a movie about rescuing ferrets! Together, we can change the way the world perceives and treats ferrets.” said Alison Parker, Director of The Ferret Squad.
In order to cover production costs for The Ferret Squad, Parker is using crowdfunding platform IndieGoGo, where companies and regular people alike can make donations in support of the project. Donation levels range anywhere from $8 to $10,000, with many perks being offered in exchange, including ‘pawtographed’ DVD’s, Associate and Executive Producer credits, and much more.
“I do hope that more companies will step up and show their support for this film, especially the ferret related companies who could potentially stand to benefit from ferrets getting positive media exposure in the mainstream.” says Parker.
Those interested in supporting The Ferret Squad can head to www.TheFerretSquad.com for more information and to make a contribution.
