Organic Light Emitting Diodes or OLED is a flat light emitting technology which is made up of a series of organic thin films which are between two conductors. They do not require a backlight making them thinner besides more efficient than the LCD displays. When an electrical current is applied then a bright light is emitted and OLEDs are used to make various beautiful and efficient displays and lighting panels.
OLED have quite a few advantages over LCD displays including:
- Lower power consumption
- Improved image quality with better contrast, a fuller viewing angle, higher brightness, faster refresh rates and a wider colour range.
- OLED has better durability and can operate in a wider temperature range
- The simpler design of the OLED enables very thin, flexible and transparent displays, something that LCD cannot do.
OLED TV’s is set to be the next generation display technology although the prices of the TV’s are high and production is limited. OLED TV’s are made from millions of pixels, each are made from red, blue and green tiny OLED materials LED TV’s are actually backlit LCD and instead of the fluorescent CCFL lamps the LED TV uses LED’s for the white backlighting. LED TV’s look a lot better than CCFL LCD’s but are not a patch on the OLED panels and this is what makes OLED TV’s so special.
As you would expect those mobile phones that boast OLED displays have far better quality although on first impressions their outer appearance can be hard to tell from any of the standard LCD display phones, although LCD mobile phones just cannot complete with the contrast ratios and the true black on an OLED screen cannot be matched.
In the future we are expecting to see the use of flexible OLED displays which will lead to bendable phones with transparent screens which will offer the developers far more design options all enabled by OLED technologies.
Alongside the advancement of OLED displays is other hardware and software that make our day to day lives more interesting and enjoyable. Smartphones have come a long way since those first generation devices were introduced back in 2006, yes it’s almost ten years since Steve Jobs launched his device that would change the way we look at communication forever, and we are eagerly awaiting the release of the new iPhone 7 this September to see what is on offer.
With it being the celebratory year next year (2017) there is great speculation and rumours that Apple will pull something rather special to commemorate a decade in the industry, but to what is anyone’s guess. We shall have to wait and see what happens in September first in order to get a better idea of what is going to be offered next year and until then the internet will be full of rumours and speculation feasting the fire that always surrounds a new release.
